Senior Abbie Vingers slammed home a goal with 2:12 left in the game to lift the Sacred Heart girls to a thrilling 2-1 victory over visiting Donoho after the Class 1A area rivals went toe-to-toe for 78 minutes on the slippery, muddy field at Fort McClellan on Monday night.
Angel Nguyen opened the scoring for the Lady Cardinals (2-0) with a goal in the opening half. Lily Grace Draper tied the score later in the half with a goal on an assist from Whitney Seals.
“I was proud of the way we played,” Sacred Heart coach Arnaldo Ostolaza said. “They never quit out there; our girls just do not quit. We can always do better, but it was an important win for us.”
There is no doubt these two teams will see each other again in the county tournament, one more regular season game and in the playoffs and you can already see the intensity developing in the rivalry.
“They made the most of their shots and we did not,” Donoho coach Jay Jenkins said after his team suffered its first loss of the season.
Falcons win second straight: Drew Williams scored a hat trick for the second straight game and three other players scored as Donoho overpowered Sacred Heart 6-0 in the boys match.
The Falcons (2-1) got two goals from Williamson and one each from Samuel Johnson and Ethan Jamison Miles to sprint out to a 4-0 halftime lead. Johnson and Grant Steed had assists.
Williamson scored his third goal and Will Nelson added one with 11:44 to go to finish the scoring in a soggy second half.
“It was very muddy out there after the rain today,” Falcons coach Matthew Wright said. “We had to adapt to the conditions. We could not press and we had to try and go over the top and we had to just be pests on defense.”
Williamson credited “some great teammates who have gotten the ball to me” for helping fuel his recent scoring spree.
“It was hard playing in these conditions and the footing was difficult,” Williamson said, “but it was fun.”
