Big innings abound

Baseball roundup: Teams use big innings to rally or take control of games around the area

Alexandria 7, Montgomery Catholic 2:
Landon Comer followed a quality start in the Calhoun County Tournament semifinals that produced a no-decision with four innings of no-hit ball to give Alexandria the chance to beat the Knights.
 
Comer struck out four. Meanwhile, Noah Primm, Layton Ellison, Jalen Borders and Jared Ponder all had two hits in the game for the Valley Cubs.
 
The Valley Cubs scored five in the first inning. Brendan Brown drove in the first run with a fielder’s choice. Two more scored later in the inning on Jared Ponder’s hot shot to short.
 
Alexandria 14, Jacksonville 9: Ryan Taylor hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and had six RBIs to lead the Valley Cubs. Mitch Welch got the win with two innings of one-hit shutout relief. Primm had two doubles in the game.
 
The Golden Eagles took a 6-1 lead with five runs in the third, but the Valley Cubs rallied. Taylor’s two-run homer highlighted a three-run third and his grand slam broke a 6-6 tie and capped a six-run fourth that put the Cubs in the lead for good.
 
Brandon Charping, Brandon Heard, Christian Royster and Coleman Oliver had two RBIs each for Jacksonville.
 
Montgomery Catholic 16, Jacksonville 6: The Golden Eagles scored six runs in the first inning, but couldn’t hold the lead. The Knights cut their deficit in half with three in the third, then broke it open by sending 13 batters to the plate in a 10-run fifth inning.
 
Brandon Charping, Brandon Heard and Dreylan Fomby all had RBI singles for Jacksonville in the first inning. Luke Voorhees was 3-for-3 with four RBIs in the game for the Knights.

Deshler 10, Oxford 3: Deshler roughed up five young pitchers for 10 runs and 11 hits while handing Oxford a 10-3 loss at Choccolocco Park, snapping the Yellow Jackets’ four-game winning streak.
 
Grant Wisdom went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Tigers (7-4). Ryan Kelley, Brayden Buckner and Will Pilgrim had two hits apiece.
 
Deshler scored on a wild pitch in the first inning, but the Jackets tied it in the bottom of the inning on Peyton Howard’s RBI triple. Deshler retook the lead in the second, then broke it open with three in the third and two in the fourth.
 
The Yellow Jackets (9-3) had eight hits in the game, three for extra bases. Reese Howard and Trey Mooney had two hits apiece.
 
American Christian 14, Wellborn 2: The Patriots, still smarting from a walk-off loss to Oxford the night before, scored four in the first inning and never looked back. Chad Fendley drove in three runs for ACA, while John Williams, Carter Lockdridge and Cameron Wyatt had two hits apiece. Brayden Dempsey went 3-for-3 for Wellborn and Jett Smith had two hits.

Faith Christian 12, Anniston 2: Stone Huie scored four runs and had an RBI triple that was Faith’s first hit of the game. The Lions built a 3-0 lead in the first without benefit of a hit. Alex Almanza allowed three hits in five innings and struck out three to get the win. Tyree Carmichael had two of the hits for Anniston.

Munford 20, Lincoln 3: Drew Harkins drove in four runs and the top four hitters in the Lions’ lineup were a combined 11-for-15 with nine RBIs. The Lions rallied from a 3-0 deficit with four in the home first, then broke it open with 10 in the second. 
 
Moody 9, Munford 8: The Blue Devils scored two runs in each of the sixth and seventh inning to wipe out an 8-5 deficit. Munford grabbed its lead with a six-run fifth, highlighted by Drew Harkins’ three-run homer. 
 
The Lions came within one out of holding on, but Mikel Warren tied the game with a solo homer after Harkins struck out the first two batters of the inning, then Braden Carpenetti drove home the go-ahead run with a triple to right field. Carpenetti also hit a two-run homer in the sixth.
