OXFORD –
On a day the Oxford baseball community gathered to honor a former player and coach, the current player who wears the legend’s number and plays his position had a big day.

Catcher Jake Spivey had five hits, a homer and 10 RBIs as the Yellow Jackets swept a pair of out-of-town visitors to complete the celebration of Randy Bussey Day that was part of the Choccolocco Spring Break Experience.

The Jackets, playing at Bud McCarty Field for the first time since April 2015, pounded Grove City (Ohio) 17-4 and had an equally easy time with Hamburg (N.Y.) 16-6.

Spivey, the County Tournament MVP, went 3-for-4 with a double and six RBIs against Grove City and 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs in the Hamburg game

The Jackets already had a 7-0 lead on Grove City when they scored 10 in the fourth. They put seven on Hamburg in the second inning of that game. The Jackets have scored at least 16 runs in each of their last three games.

Spivey singled home the Jackets’ second run in the Grove City game, hit a three-run double in the fourth and a two-run single in the 10-run inning. Trey Higgins had a two-run single and Trey Mooney a two-run double in the big inning.

Spivey and Jarin Turner hit back-to-back homers in the second inning of the Hamburg game. Peyton Howard had a two-run double and Higgins a two-run single in the inning.

Bussey was a former Oxford catcher who wore No. 16 and later returned to his alma mater to coach the team and lead it to the state championship series. He died in October.

Smith hits another bomb

PIEDMONT – Sean Smith homered for the third straight game, this time a grand slam, and Mason Mohon singled in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning as part of a three-hit, four-RBI day to power Piedmont past Westbrook Christian 14-11.

Smith homered in the nightcap of the Bulldogs’ doubleheader with Pleasant Valley Thursday and hit the walk-off winner against Ohatchee on Friday. His slam came in the fourth inning and gave the Bulldogs a 9-6 lead.

The game was a back-and-forth affair. Westbrook scored four in the first, but Piedmont answered with four in the bottom of the inning. The Bulldogs led 5-4, Westbrook took the lead with two in the top of the fourth, then Smith delivered in the bottom of the inning.

Westbrook went back in front 10-9 in the fifth, then Piedmont took the lead for good with three in the bottom of the inning. Mohon had the go-ahead single in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth.

Mohon went 3-for-3 in the game. T.J. Fairs also had three hits. Greyson Robinson went 3-for-3 with six RBIs for Westbrook.
