Providence Christian scores three unearned runs in first, holds Piedmont to three hits in Class 3A title opener
By East Alabama Sports Today
MONTGOMERY – A rough first inning and a tough pitcher on the mound proved to be Piedmont’s undoing in the first game of its Class 3A state championship series against Providence Christian Tuesday night.
Two errors led to three unearned runs in the first inning and junior Grayson Stewart held Piedmont to three hits in a fast 4-0 loss at Paterson Field.
The series moves to Riverwalk Stadium Wednesday at 10 a.m. A third game, if necessary, will follow.
T.J. Fairs got two of the Bulldogs’ three hits – a leadoff double and a double in the third. Sean Smith had their other hit, a fourth inning single. Stewart retired the last 11 Bulldogs he faced after Smith’s hit. He got six of his nine strikeouts in the closing run.
Back-to-back errors, a hit batsman and Brayden Banner’s two-run single produced three unearned runs for the Eagles (29-8) in the first against Piedmont’s Logan Pruitt. Banner’s fielder’s choice plated another run in the third.
Piedmont is 35-9.
