As the Sunny King Charity Classic looks towards its future, it first recognized a big part of its storied past.
During Thursday night’s pre-tournament VIP reception organizers honored four of their longest tenured leaders with the title “Chairman Emeritus.”
The tournament bestowed the honor on former chairmen Franz Cobb and David Brown and most recent chairmen Hank Smith and Jason Alderman.
Cobb and Brown were the front men for the tournament for nearly 30 years, while Smith and Alderman kept their vision alive in the years that followed their retirements.
Smith and Alderman plan to still be around, but in support roles as a new generation of leadership that started with Brett Key this year takes the reins. Officials hope to announce next year’s chairman during Sunday’s post-round presentations.
“It’s been an honor to work for the organization for 20 years and the Good Lord willing I’ll still work for it 20 years more if they’ll have me,” Smith said. “The old guard’s not going anywhere, but we’re actively replacing ourselves. We’re replacing ourselves, but not leaving.”
“It’s like the distinguished senator,” Alderman said of the title. “We’ll still be involved and provide a steady head, not so much on the day-to-day decisions, just kind of a resource.”
WEATHER, IT MATTERS: Organizers will be keeping an eye on the skies this weekend and cross their fingers Tropical Storm Barry has as little impact on the tournament as possible. Several contingencies have been discussed if the storm interrupts play, among them basing scores of any shortened rounds on the last number of holes everyone has completed regardless of which side of the golf course they started.
“The good news is it’s tracking to the west so we’re hoping it continues on that way and maybe give us a break,” Smith said. “We’re just going to see what happens. We’ll play as much as we can as long as conditions are safe to play in. This is something that can’t be perfect. All we can do is the best we can.”
TAKING FLIGHT: Tournament officials re-confirmed they would be re-flighting the field during the event but declined to say after which round it would occur. They added, however, if the weather becomes a factor they may not re-flight at all.
OVERFLOW FIELD: Before any ball is struck and any re-flighting is done, there are 36 teams listed in the Championship flights (Ford F-150 and Ford Expedition). The remaining splits of the 211-team field are as follows: 27 in the Acura MDX first flight, 30 in Honda Pilot, 34 in Toyota Tacoma, 24 in Honda Passport, 34 in Toyota Avalon and 26 in Honda Accord.
TAKE YOUR PICK: In addition to the drop-zone premium, each course is offering a two-pin option on one of its greens. They are No. 10 at Anniston CC, No. 18 at Cider Ridge and No. 5 Mindbreaker at Silver Lakes. Players have the option of choosing either hole.
The drop-zones are on No. 15 at ACC, No. 16 at Cider Ridge and No. 7 Heartbreaker at Silver Lakes. For a $20 donation, teams can bypass the tee and go directly to the drop area, where they will be laying 1.
JUST A REMINDER: In an effort to promote pace of play, players are encouraged to pick up after net bogey.
