Another record

LeCroy, Harper stretch lead by tying SKCC scamble record with 16-under 56; lead Archers by 4

OXFORD —
Another day, another record. These Sunny King leaders are doing what their team was designed to do.

Jacob LeCroy and Jacob Harper continued their assault on the Sunny King Charity Classic record book Saturday when they shot a “smooth” record-tying 16-under-par 56 in the scamble format at Cider Ridge Golf Club.

That’s a day after sending a buzz throughout the tournament with the record scramble round they shot at Silver Lakes.

“Everybody was hyping us up,” LeCroy said of the reaction to their round. “It was exciting. We played really good; beat the record by what, two. That was special and everyone was talking about it. Just had fun. Had fun today.”

Teams were still on the course when they finished but it as well as the leaders were playing it was hard to imagine anyone catching them, but all were chasing them.

They are at 36-under 108 after 36 holes. They play the best-ball final round at Anniston Country Club — LeCroy’s home course — Sunday.
They lead Randy and Logan Archer by four after the father-son team posted a 15-under 57. They shot the low round at ACC last year.
And the rain that fell during the afternoon portion of  the round isn’t expected to help those challenging.

The all-time tournament record is 43-under-par, set in 2016 by Ty Cole and Gary Wigington, the three-time reigning champions the team was formed specifically to challenge.

History suggests it will fall. The eventual champion hasn’t shot worse than 8-under in the final round since 2010 and less than 10-under once.

“It’s fun playing with a target on your back,” Harper said. “I like it.”

The scamble record of 16-under 56 was set by Wigington and Randy Reaves in 2002 at Cane Creek Golf Course.

LeCroy and Harper birdied every hole on their first nine and were 10-under after 10 holes.

“It was smooth, that would be the right word for it,” Harper said. “We just played solid, that’s about it.

“We had to kind of grind a little bit coming in, but the first 10 or 12 holes it was pretty easy.”
