The Donoho volleyball team gained a measure of revenge, showed a lot of resilience and grew up in a big way Monday night.
The Lady Falcons split two matches, but they got some payback on a Cedar Bluff team that beat them in straight sets in the finals of Saturday’s Faith Christian Tournament and dropped a tight three-setter to Alexandria.
They rallied to beat Cedar Bluff 19-25, 25-22, 19-17, and lost to Alexandria 24-26, 30-28, 15-7.
They were down in the third set to Cedar Bluff 14-10 before rallying to win. They were down 13-4 in the second set of the Alexandria match and rallied to extend the set past 25.
The Lady Falcons changed their rotation “on the fly” in the second set of the Cedar Bluff match to a 6-2 to promote better blocking and it served them well the rest of the night. Mary Marshall Perry, Estella Connell and Yana Osovska had four blocks apiece in the match. Perry had six blocks and Maggie Wakefield three against Alexandria.
In the Alexandria match, Lily Grace Draper had eight kills, four digs and a block. Wakefield had two kills and a block. Yana Osovska had three kills and four blocks. Maggie Miller had 11 assists in both matches.
“This tells me we’ve got some fighters,” Donoho coach Jamie Clendenin said. “They grew up a lot, which was big to see early in the season. They started believing in each other.”
Jordan Beason and Lexi Weber each had seven kills for Alexandria in the Donoho match. Weber also had four aces and three blocks, and Beason had eight digs. Ashley Parker had 11 digs and Sarah Pelham had 10, including a diving save in the second set to keep the Lady Cubs alive. Anna Johnson had 26 assists, three aces and seven digs.
Alexandria also beat Cedar Bluff 25-21, 25-18. Beason, Weber, Madison Wallace and Kandyn Blakenship all had four kills apiece. Pelham had nine digs and Johnson had 17 assists.
“We’re real up and down, really inconsistent,” Lady Cubs coach Whitney Welch said. “I was proud we fought back. We have lots of new faces; we’re trying to figure it out. We just need more reps.”
