HUNTSVILLE – Jacksonville has been playing some of its best volleyball as the second half of the season chugged along to its most important stage and it will carry that play to next week’s Elite Eight in Birmingham as the top Class 4A seed from the North.
The Lady Golden Eagles won the regional title Friday with a 3-0 sweep of Brooks (25-18, 25-22, 25-23). They beat Fairview in the semifinals 3-1. They play Montgomery Catholic in their Elite Eight opener Wednesday at the Crossplex.
“I’m really proud of this group for being a fantastic team and playing with focus and determination,” Jacksonville coach David Clark said. “I feel like we are starting to peak at the best possible time.”
Jacksonville’s dynamic front-line duo of Kayla Broom and Brenna Stone again led the charge.
Broom had 25 kills and seven blocks against Brooks and 23 kills and 11 blocks against Fairview. Stone had 16 kills and nine blocks against Brooks and 29 kills12 blocks against Fairview. Molly Wilson had 25 assists against Brooks and 43 against Fairview.
Two other county teams – Donoho and Alexandria – will join them as No. 3 seeds in their respective classifications.
Donoho defeated Phillips in the Class 1A consolation match after dropping the first set 22-25, 25-13, 25-18, 25-16. The Lady Falcons lost in the semifinals to Spring Garden 19-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-21.
They will play South Lamar in their Elite Eight opener.
Alexandria defeated Guntersville 25-17, 20-25, 25-19, 25-14 in the Class 5A consolation match. The Lady Cubs lost a tight semifinal match to Lawrence County 25-18, 19-25, 25-19, 25-27, 15-13.
They will play Brewbaker Tech in their Elite Eight opener.
In the Lawrence County match, Jordan Beason had 15 kills and 19 digs, Kandyn Blankenship had nine kills and 18 digs, Sarah Pelham had 25 digs, and Anna Johnson had 44 assists and 23 digs. Against Guntersville, Beason and Lexi Weber both had 12 kills, Johnson had 32 assists, Pelham had 20 digs, Madison Wallace and Weber both had seven blocks.
Two other teams opened their regional play Friday, but didn’t qualify for the state tournament bracket.
Ohatchee lost its Class 2A opening-round match to Sand Rock 25-10, 27-29, 25-13, 25-27, 15-7.
Oxford swept Clay-Chalkville in its Class 6A opening-round match, then were eliminated by Athens 11-25, 25-19, 29-27, 25-21. Lakijah Brown recorded 29 kills and Cadie Burn recorded 49 assists.
