OXFORD – Her coaches and teammates have been encouraging Oxford freshman Justice Woods to take a more active role in the offense. She took them up on that offer late in Saturday’s game.
Woods scored a game-high 11 points, eight in the second half and six in the fourth quarter, and grabbed nine rebounds as the Lady Yellow Jackets took a 45-35 victory from White Plains at the Oxford Sports Arena.
“I’m really proud of Justice Woods,” Oxford coach Melissa Bennett said. “We have been on her to shoot more; she’s has been really timid about taking perimeter shots. She has been putting in the extra reps and finally took some outside shots tonight.”
One of those perimeter shots produced a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter that put the Lady Jackets ahead by 19 points.
White Plains’ Kaylee Johnson led all scorers with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Sacred Heart 62, John Carroll 22: Alisia Person and Miyah Harris combined to hit nine of the team’s 12 3-pointers as the Lady Cardinals (8-3) won their third game in as many days. The Lady Cardinals hit seven from behind in the arc in the first half while opening a 38-8 lead. Harris finished with 23 points and Person had 13.
Mt. Zion 49, Piedmont 32: The Lady Bulldogs bounced back from a slow start to get within three at halftime, but couldn’t survive a big third quarter by the visiting Lady Eagles. Jordan Kierbow scored eight of her team-high 17 points in a 21-point Mt. Zion third quarter and 14 in the second half. Lele Ridley led Piedmont with 17 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Z’Hayla Walker had five points, 12 rebounds and three steals.
