Alexandria completed an emotional week Monday with a 68-52 victory over Fort Payne to win the Champions Christmas Classic.
The Valley Cubs (7-2), playing for a lot more than basketball, were in their first wave of games since a serious car accident 10 days ago sent junior guard Kam Crumley to the hospital with a serious head injury. They beat Moody by 43, Lincoln by 18 and Fort Payne by 16.
“I’m just tickled for the guys, for the emotional roller coaster that they’ve been kind of going through, just to see some success and to grow,” Alexandria coach Jason Johnson said. “I’ve been proud of our young guys. A lot of people don’t know we lost another guard (senior Adam Young, knee), so it’s really made our sophomore guards really have to play and play a lot. It’s been pleasing to watch them grow up.”
Those young guards, Julian Wright and D’Anthony Walton, both made the all-tournament team. Walton had 10 points and Wright eight in the title game and they averaged 17.3 and 11.7, respectively, in the tournament.. Collin Taylor was the Valley Cubs’ second-leading scorer in the title game with 18 points.
Junior post Landan Williams was named tournament MVP. He had a game-high 22 points in the title game and averaged 16.7 points in the tournament.
He had eight points in the fourth quarter when the Valley Cubs outscored the Wildcats 25-8 after entering the quarter trailing by two.
The Valley Cubs’ balanced scoring and ability to handle the press offset Fort Payne’s strong outside game. The Wildcats hit 12 3-pointers in the game. Lane White was their leading scorer with 20 points, but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.
Williams’ selection as MVP was especially poignant. He has been a close friend of Crumley’s since second grade and Friday he said it has been “pretty hard” trying to keep it all together since the accident.
“He came through with three big games for us,” Johnson said. “He has been kind of a vocal leader for us, too, stepping up in that part of his game.
“Him and Kam are real close. I think (the MVP) meant a little extra to him and playing with a little more urgency, I think, knowing any time you could not be playing anymore.”
In the tournament consolation games, Weaver, White Plains and Lincoln all will go into Christmas off victories.
Weaver edged Ohatchee 55-51 for its second win of the season. The Bearcats (2-12) rallied from 10 down at the start of the fourth quarter to snap a six-game losing streak.
At one point in the comeback the Bearcats had three freshmen, a junior and a senior on the floor. One of the freshmen, Armane Burton, scored 13 points in the quarter (and 10 in the first quarter) and finished with a career-high 26.
“The kids finally bought in and weren’t watching the scoreboard and they played hard for four quarters; that’s what I’ve been preaching from Day One, to play hard,” Weaver coach Marcus Herbert said. “I think the kids seeing this, knowing they can compete and finish the thing, it’s maybe an eye-opener for second half of the season.”
White Plains routed Saks 66-39. Jaden Chatman led all scorers with 25 points. He shot 8-for-9 from the field.
Lincoln edged Moody 77-74 in overtime. Javion Surles capped a 40-point game by hitting three free throws in the final 30 seconds for the margin. He hit one of two with 28 seconds left to break a 74-74 tie and then hit two with 1.5 seconds left to seal it. Moody’s DeJuan Holyfield had a baseline drive roll go over the rim at the buzzer sending the game into overtime. Brian Garrett had 23 for Lincoln.
Regular season
Jacksonville 64, Sylvania 55: Donavon McCain had 14 points and 16 rebounds, Ron Wiggins had his best game since returning from football with 13 points and six boards, and two other Golden Eagles scored in double figures.
Kyrie Maynor led the Golden Eagles with 16 points and Yessman Green had 11. McCain was 7-of-9 from the field as the Golden Eagles shot 51 percent from inside the 3-point arc. They also outrebounded Sylvania 41-30 with 13 offensive rebounds producing 14 second-chance points.
“Donavon was a rebounding machine tonight,” Jacksonville coach Cordell Hunt said. “Ron found something tonight, I think, too.”
