GLENCOE – For the Glencoe girls basketball team, winning their own Holiday Shootout meant a lot more than just being able to add another trophy to the display case.

The Lady Jackets won their tournament for the second time in three years and first time under coach Jamie Barkley, putting together a big second half to defeat Pell City 47-31 in Saturday’s championship game.

The Lady Jackets (13-4) held a six-point halftime lead, then outscored the Lady Panthers 25-15 in the final two quarters.

“For the girls winning it was a mountain to cross,” Barkley said. “Getting that will make you feel accomplished and ready to take on the next big battle.

“With all the change-over and turnover that we’ve had this year, (it’s important) for them to have that sense of accomplishment. We have two area games next week we need to win at least one of them, and we need that feather in our hat to say we did this, this and this, now let’s go do it again.”

Unlike the night before when finding the right defense was key to beating Cedar Bluff in the semifinals, Barkley said the key Saturday was finding the right offense. In this case, the right offense was attacking the basket in the second half.

Aubrey Gray was the Lady Jackets’ leading scorer with 11 points – nine in the second half – but Anna Grace Goodwin had a couple 3-pointers and nine points, and Ashley Morgan had eight points spread across the four quarters. In all, 10 players scored for Glencoe.

“It was a very balanced attack tonight,” Barkley said.

Alexandria 48, DAR 46: Kayleigh Steen and Ashley Phillips hit three 3-pointers at the top end of a 12-1 run that swept the Lady Cubs to their victory.

They were trailing 41-36 at the time. Steen hit back-to-back 3s to give the Lady Cubs the lead. DAR tied it with a free throw then Phillips hit a 3 with 2:46 to play to put Alexandria on top for good. TyShica Woodgett made a la

“I just pushed through,” Steen said. “I don’t know how my legs got there, but I did. I’m pretty tired and I’m suffering from an ankle injury so I had to push though for my team right there.”

Steen scored all 12 of her points off 3-pointers. Phillips led all scorers with 20 points.

“Her job is to be a good shooter and that’s what she did,” Alexandria coach Craig Kiker said. “The first five or six gmaes she didn’t shoot it real good but we all know she’s a good shooter and that’s what she’s supposed to do.”

Cleburne County Christmas Classic

HEFLIN –Ava Pope scored nine points and played a hand in keeping Weaver from getting the tying points as Piedmont scored a 38-37 victory in the consolation bracket.

Pope prevented Weaver’s Haley Homesley from putting up a a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 44 seconds left by fouling on the floor. Homesley made both free throws to get the Lady Bearcats within a point. Weaver got it back after a turnover with 14 seconds left.

The ball went to Kiese Hubbard for a 3-pointer, but Piedmont had a double-team on her and made her miss.

Homesley led all scorers with 24 points, including four 3-pointers. Teammate Kayleigh Hindsman had six points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Cherokee County and Winterboro will play for the championship Monday night.
