PIEDMONT – The White Plains girls basketball team is riding a season-best three-game winning streak and it’s not difficult to pinpoint the reason.
The Lady Wildcats hit nine 3-pointers Monday and used a big third quarter to take control on the way to a 59-44 win over Piedmont.
They’ve hit 29 3-pointers during the winning streak – 11 against Weaver and nine each against Pleasant Valley and Piedmont. Cheyenne Cochran and Adriana Sotelo had five each in the Weaver game and Kaylee Johnson had three in each of the other two games.
“They’re playing hard, they always play hard, but I think the main difference is we’re hitting shots from the outside the last few games,” White Plains coach Matt Ford said. “We have two big area games coming up so it’s good to feel some confidence shooting the ball.”
The Lady Wildcats (7-7) used a 10-0 run to break away from an 11-all tie and take the lead. They took control with a 19-5 third quarter run..
Lily Ponder led White Plains with 17 points. She hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter and was 9-of-12 from the free throw line in the game. Callyn Martin had 13 points and Johnson had nine with 3-pointers in each of the first three quarters.
“Kaylee’s been much more confident this year from outside and that helps us out in spreading the floor out,” Ford said. “Callyn brings it every single day on defense; she just drives other people crazy, she anticipates things well.. Lily’s just a smart ballplayer. She does aa better job than anybody of getting to the rim and finishing.”
The three-game winning streak has all come agaianst teams from Class 3A Area 11. The Lady Wildcats are 5-1 against those teams this season.
