Tails never fails.

That’s Alexandria girls coach Craig Kiker’s philosophy on coin tosses and that’s what came up when they flipped Tuesday for the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A Area 12 tournament.

Southside called heads and the coin came up tails, giving the Lady Cubs the top seed and hosting rights for the tournament, plus an automatic berth into the subregion round of the state tournament.

“The Etowah coach flipped it and asked who wanted to call and I said you (Southside) call it,” Kiker said. “It’s big for us because we’re at home and we’ll have a boys game after so our crowd should be pretty good. And shooting in our gym never hurts.

“The biggest thing is it puts you in the playoffs without having to worry about playing a game first.”

It was Kiker’s first coin toss.

A few hours later, Oxford and Albertville had their coin toss in Gadsden for the Class 6A Area 13 boys tournament and Oxford won it when Albertville called “tails.”

The Yellow Jackets will play the Albertville-Fort Payne winner on Feb. 7 in the Sports Arena already guaranteed a spot in the subregion round. The Jackets forced the coin toss by beating Albertville Monday night..

“The biggest thing (about winning the coin toss) is you get to play at home,” said Oxford coach Joel Van Meter, who said he would’ve called tails too if he made the call. “We haven’t played at home a ton. We finish with three and now it’s a fourth. You like playing on your home floor. Things are easier on on your home floor … but you’re going to be playing a quality opponent and you’ve got to figure out a way to beat them.”

In a sense the Jackets had this one in the bag. Van Meter went to the meeting with Oxford athletics director Larry Davidson, who has something of a Jackie Slater legacy when it comes to coin tosses. Slater famously never lost a coin toss when he played in the NFL and legend has it Davidson never has either.

“I’m going to have him with me all the time,” Van Meter said.
