Cole comes from two shots back to win the Dub Ellis Invitational for the fifth year in a row
By East Alabama Sports Today
CENTRE – Ty Cole shot a final-round 68 Sunday to come from two shots back at the start of the day and win the Dub Ellis Invitational at Cherokee County CC for the fifth straight year.
Cole’s 36-hole total of 7-under-par 135 was six shots better than runner-up Jeremy McGatha. First-round leader Chad Calvert was third (143).
During his five consecutive wins Cole has shot 51-under-par and won by a total margin of 33 shots.
His 68 was the low round of the day and, with the field backed up to the blue tees for Championship Sunday, the only one under par.
“It’s a big difference on this golf course,” he said. “It’s not so much the distance, but the shots change. I think it works in my favor to back it up, not so much the distance, but it’s difference shots.
“The tee balls change on four, five or six holes. You can’t hit the same tee ball from the white tees as you do from the blue tees. I think that kind of plays in my favor a little bit.”
Cole cut Calvert’s overnight lead in half with a birdie at 2 and then caught him on 3 when Calvert bogeyed.
Calvert, the last player not named Cole to win the tournament, regained a two-shot lead on the next hole when he birdied at Cole bogeyed.
Cole picked up the two shots with pars on 5 and 6 and the players turned tied for the lead. He took a one-shot lead with a par on 12, then took control with a birdie on 13 to Calvert’s bogey. He birdied 16 and 18 coming home to extend the lead.
McGatha shot 35 on the back to overtake Calvert for second place.
David Garrett, Side Garrett and Brian Johnson were the top three finishers in the First Flight. Shane Porter, Scott Hays and Daily Thomas were the top three finishers in the Second Flight.
