SOUTHSIDE – It’s been an up-and-down year for the Oxford volleyball team, but the Lady Jackets checked off one of their goals Tuesday night.
The Lady Jackets clinched the No. 1 seed and hosting rights for their area tournament when they beat Southside 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 25-27, 25-20). They also swept Oneonta 2-0 (25-17, 25-12).
Lakijah Brown returned to the Lady Jackets’ lineup after missing Monday night’s match and recorded 26 kills and seven digs in the two matches. Lisa Montgomery had nine, Kara King seven and Channing Gallahar four.
Cadie Burn dished 22 assists and Adrionna Foster had 19. Arianna Curry had 19 digs and Aamertia Wilson had 17.
The Lady Jackets (22-16) will play Pell City in its area tournament opener Oct. 13. Springville and Southside will play in the other semifinals. The winners advance to the subregionals.
“This year our team has definitely had its ups and downs,” Oxford assistant coach Rachel Poe said. “We have struggled with consistency, but our girls are fighters. We have been hustling, encouraging and playing together as a unit, and as a coach that is rewarding to see.
“They are making progress, and our goal is to continue to get better each day and work hard in order to be able to put everything together consistently once our season ‘starts’ in postseason play.”

Lady Cubs coach Whitney Welch was not happy with the way her team’s night went Monday splitting with Jacksonville (win) and Donoho (loss) but it bounced back in a big way Tuesday.
Jordan Beason led the Lady Cubs with 11 kills. Lexi Weber had nine and Kandy Blakenship had six. Anna Johnson had 26 assists, Sarah Pelham had 10 digs, and Rylee Gattis had four kills and two blocks.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do still, but I feel good about getting there throughout this month’s push,” Welch said.
