There are some games in a career you just never forget. Beau Winn will remember Friday night’s game for a long time.

Winn returned to the bench as a head basketball coach Friday night and led Weaver to a 47-45 come-from-behind victory over Ashville.

“I think that’s one of the things you’ll never forget, for sure,” Winn said. “And more importantly those kids won’t ever forget it, either, because tonight they learned what it’s like to win and that’s something that’s going to be special to them for a long, long time.”

The Bearcats trailed by 10 going into the fourth quarter. Kyle Knight tied the game at 44 on a 3-pointer with less than a minute to play, then put the Bearcats up for good with a bucket with 17.2 seconds to play.

The teams traded free throws in the last 10 seconds for the final margin.

Weaver’s Kyle Knight led all scorers with 17 points. Brendyn Knight had 10. Kyle Knight had eight points in the first quarter and he and Brendyn Knight had seven points each in the fourth-quarter comeback.

“I cried a little; I was so emotional,” Winn said. “I told my kids you’ve been getting kicked in the teeth for the past two or three years tonight is the night that stops. They did it. All I did was push them to the point where they could believe in themselves.”

Winn was elevated to head coach after former coach Marcus Herbert left to join former Jacksonville and Pleasant Valley coach Ryan Chambless’ staff at Rome (Ga.) High School.

He was the head coach at Wellborn for two seasons (2013-2015) and after he lost that position due to a certification snafu he went on to serve as an assistant at Ohatchee and Weaver.

“Winning’s always sweeter, but to see the look on those kids’ faces, that’s a win for me,” Winn said. “No matter what it said on the scoreboard – don’t get me wrong, nobody plays this game to lose – seeing them and how excited they were and to work hard and for it to finally pay off for them that’s win enough for me.”

The Weaver girls won their season opener, beating Ashville 60-32.Haley Homesley scored more than half of the Lady Bearcats’ points and as many as Ashville’s team. She had 10 in the first quarter with two 3-pointers and 18 in the second half.
