Eddie Bullock doesn’t mind scheduling the toughest teams he can find because he knows it’ll make his Anniston girls basketball team better in the long run.
He knows there’s a risk of losing that comes with such an endeavor, but not even could have imagined what happened in the first half Tuesday night when his reigning Class 5A state champions faced reigning Class 7A runnerup Hoover.
The Lady Bucs beat Anniston at its own game, forcing turnovers, dominating the glass and hitting 3s. They forced the Lady Bulldogs into 18first-half turnovers while opening a 20-point halftime lead. Anniston fought back in the third quarter, but Hoover won out 67-53.
“I knew they were going to be tough, they’ve got their whole team back,” Bullock said. “We had almost 20 turnovers the first half. I’ve never coached a team in my life that had that many turnovers. A lot of that has to be attributed to being new players and young players, but if you take care of the ball and do what you do in practice you shouldn’t have 20 turnovers.”
The Lady Bucs (3-0), who beat their first two opponents this season by a combined 93 points, were relentless in the first half. The 18 turnovers they forced led to 25 points – more than Anniston scored scored in the half.
They also hit six of their eight 3-pointers in the half. There was a stretch of four straight possession late in the first half with three 3s and a three-point play that pushed the lead to 24-8.
With a 40-20 deficit and two quarters to play Anniston was on pace to get quick-clocked when the fourth quarter rolled around.
But the Lady Dawgs regrouped at halftime. They scored the first nine points of the third quarter and went on a 22-11 tear that cut their deficit to single digits.
“They played with pride,” Bullock said.
Hoover was all over Anniston leading scorer Allasha Dudley. The Lady Bucs held her to two field goals – one in each half – and just 10 points.
Serena Hardy, who came over after Sacred Heart shut down its athletics program, led Anniston with 14 points. Hardy hit four 3-pointers in the second half, one that got them as close as nine points in the third quarter and three in the fourth quarter.

OXFORD — Anytime your full court press can create 34 turnovers and you can bang home 10 3-pointers you’ve got to like your chances.
That’s exactly what Oxford did in beating Lincoln 67-22 to remain undefeated (4-0).
“We work on the press a lot in practice,” Jackets coach Melissa Bennett said. “That is what we want to be known for and tonight it was working well for us.”
Seven different players hit 3-pointers for Oxford. Lauren Ellard, Emma McCullough and Jamea Gaston had two apiece.
”I can’t remember ever hitting that three’s in a game,” Bennett said. “Hopefully that got us some confidence in shooting the ball.”
Freshman Xaionna Whitfield was all over the court for the Lady Jackets, pouring in 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds to lead the Lady Jackets. Lauren Ellard added 11 points and had a pair of 3s, while Lisa Montgomery added nine rebounds with a strong performance on the glass.
The Lady Jackets had scoring runs of seven, eight, 13 and 15 in streaking out to a 56-11 lead late in the third quarter. Jaycee Woods had 15 points to lead Lincoln.
