WEAVER – Munford’s Connor Morgan had one of those dream nights Thursday. Every ball that left his hand seemed to find nothing but net.
The junior guard hit a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored 27 points to lead the Lions past Weaver 75-61.
“He couldn’t miss,” Weaver coach Beau Winn said. “We were in his face on half of his makes and he still hit them. Ball never hit the rim – all net on all of them.”
“He shot the ball really good tonight,” Munford coach Michael Easley said. “He’s such a pure shooter and when the ball is coming off his hands like it was tonight he has the ability to put up a lot of points and stretch leads out for us.”
Morgan hit four 3s in the first quarter as the Lions opened a 23-12 lead. He had three more in the second half. And he was fouled on two other attempts, making five of the six free throws. His previous varsity career highs were 14 points and four 3s.
“My teammates did a good job of creating space and getting me the open looks I needed to score,” he said. “It was a fun game to play in. I’m just glad we were able to pull out a win heading into the start of area play. I’m hoping we can make a push for the playoffs later this year.”
Jaquan Anderson added 14 and Rashard Russell 12 for the Lions. Tristan Brown led Weaver with 19 points. Kohl Perry had 15.

RAINSVILLE – The Yellow Jackets learned a little more about what separates good from great in suffering their first loss of the season.
They jumped out to an 18-10 lead, but fell behind 32-28 at halftime and the Bears pulled away in the third quarter. Cole Millican had nine of his 15 in the second quarter to spark Plainview’s comeback. Jonah Williams led the Bears with 22 points; he hit all five of their 3-pointers.
Oxford’s Justin Moore led all scorers with 28 points. He scored 18 in the second half and has 42 in his last two games after being held to two in the season opener. Rylan Houck had 10 points.
“We just couldn’t get over the hump,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “It’s a great learning experience for us. We returned two players with experience from last year. Every day our guys are learning and understanding what it takes to be a great team. I’m very confident we will get there.”
Plainview coach Robi Coker has no doubt about that.
“Oxford will be a lot better in January than they are today; they’re missing a couple pieces that are used to being in the heat of battle,” he said. “I really like their team. I love Moore and Houck, and I think those other guards are going to continue to get better.”
Coker will get to see just how much the Jackets have gained in three weeks when they return to Plainview in mid-December to play Grissom in the one-day Bobby Ledbetter Classic.

Girls Games
Weaver 59, Munford 30
WEAVER – Haley Homesley missed the competition when her spring sports season was cut short by injury and the COVID-19 pandemic. But the time away made her a more focused player upon her return.
Weaver girls basketball coach Gary Atchley said his only senior is a different kind of player now. On this night, Homesley scored 25 points and led the Lady Bearcats to their third straight victory to start the season, 59-30 over Munford.
She is averaging 22.7 points during the Lady Bearcats’ 3-0 start. She had 32 in the season opener and 12 against Faith Christian’s box-and-one.
“She took over the leadership role,” Atchley said. “She’s a completely different player. Her getting hurt and not getting to play softball last year turned her whole mindset around. Now she’s the first in the gym and the last to leave, all the cliches. She’s awesome to coach and she’s playing great.”
Ranburne 55, Piedmont 40
RANBURNE – Briley Merrill scored 19 of her game-high 22 points in the first half to keep Piedmont at arm’s length, then the Lady Bulldogs (2-0) pulled away in the second half. Natalie Merrill hit two of her three 3-pointers in the second half and Julianna Merrill scored all six of her points in the third quarter. Lele Ridley had 21 for Piedmont, which dressed seven players for its season opener.
