Collinsville and Handley, the two teams traveling the farthest to play, made their first starts in the Champions Girls Thanksgiving Classic Monday and both moved iinto the winner’s bracket.

Collinsville took down Jacksonville 47-31 and Handley pulled away from Alexandria 66-31 after the Lady Cubs tied the game midway through the second quarter.

Handley grabbed a big early lead, but Alexandria battled back and earned its first tie 20-20 on Ashley Phillips’ second of two free throws with 3:43 left. The Lady Tigers then went on a 14-3 run with Teanna Watts scoring nine of the points.

“It’s a testament to my second team,” Handley coach Courtney Strain Screws said. “We were in very bad foul trouble. We do play very aggressive. We do get real hands-y from time to time, but it’s a testament to my second group to not only keep us in the ballgame, but to have a significant lead.”

The Lady Cubs scored only eight points after halftime and just 11 points in the final 19:17 of the game. Ashley Phillips led them in scoring with 12 points.

“I’m happy we came back, but still a little bit disappointed,” Alexandria coach Craig Kiker said. “We’re still out of shape, so we can’t play as hard as we can every play right now. I just think we were out of gas in the third quarter. We can’t be out of gas at halftime. That’s the biggest thing. We were out of gas at halftime, not at the end of the game.”

Collinsville 47, Jacksonville 31: The Lady Panthers hit nine 3-pointers – seven in the first half – and all their free throws. Five of the six Collinsville players who scored in the game hit at least one 3-pointer; four hit two apiece. Hadley Hamilton led the winner with 13 points. Kayla Broom led Jacksonville with 10.

Collinsville will play Oxford and Handley will play Ohatchee in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Spring Garden 66, White Plains 35: The Lady Panthers got back on the winning track by pulling away from a close game in the second quarter.

The defending 1A state champions, stunned in their season opener by Oxford in the opening round, turned up the pressure in the second quarter and roared to a 16-point halftime lead. Ace Austin scored nine of her 18 points in the quarter and Lexy Adkison had 13 of her 19 in the period.

Lily Ponder led White Plains with 13 points. Adriana Sotelo had 12 off four 3-pointers.

Hokes Bluff 52, Pleasant Valley 45: The Lady Raiders rallied from nine points down at the end of the third quarter to get within two with 3:19 to play, then Hokes Bluff went on a 7-1 run over the next minute to regain control.

Macey Roper and Gracie Hood helped PV climb back into it and Rylee Haynes hit two free throws to make it 41-39. The Lady Eagles proceeded to hit five straight free throws and a basket to go back up eight with 1:46 to go.

Hood led PV with 14 points on the strength of four 3-pointers. Haynes had 13 points. Kileigh Blackwell led Hokes Bluff with 19 points. Maddie Smith added 16.
