LINCOLN – Not all the teams Anniston is going to play this season will be on the level of a Hoover, Calhoun, Thompson or any of the premier opponents the Bulldogs will play in their holiday tournaments.
Honestly, most of the teams the Bulldogs will play this year will be overmatched. Coach Torry Brown knows the element that separates the good teams from the special ones is the focus they can maintain when the opposition isn’t up to snuff.
The first real test of whether the Bulldogs can keep the pedal to the metal came Monday in the Lincoln Round Robin. They proved up to the task, rolling over Talladega County Central 97-41 and with the exception of a few stretches stayed on their game no matter who was in it.
“You always want to be able to play the same way against everybody,” Brown said. “I told the kids before the game and I referenced that to the University of Alabama’s football team: It doesn’t matter who they’re playing, they come out and play the same way. And we need to do that.”
Their first group only a played a half, but they gave the guys who followed a 56-18 lead to work with.
Antonio Kite had 25 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists. He had 19 points in the Dawgs’ 35-point second quarter. Malcolm Carlisle had 16 points and five steals before falling hard on his wrist with 1:42 left in the half and heading straight to the dressing room.
The senior guard who went for 38 in the season-opener against Hoover spent the rest of the game with a big ice bag wrapped on his wrist. The injury isn’t expected to be a problem.
TCC actually scored the first bucket of the game, then Anniston ripped off 21 straight points before the Fighting Tigers just beat the quarter horn with another layup. Fourteen of the first 16 points in the run were scored off turnovers.
“I thought defensively we were really good the first half; I thought we had great energy and our defense turned into offense,” Brown said. “Carlisle defensively set the tone for us and I think we saw a lot of the rust off Antonio tonight, and that was good to see.”
The big first-half lead allowed Brown to get some players into the game who needed to get some minutes and the group that came in “didn’t give up much either.”
Taishun Hall scored 10 points in his first game after football, Jacques Thomas had eight points and two steals, and Alex Teague hit three 3-pointers in the second half.
But the most impressive of the non-starters on this day was Miciah Myles. The senior moved back to Anniston after a year in Mississippi, where he played sparingly but grew three inches. He is expected to help the Bulldogs defensively — he can guard any of the five spots on the floor — and even more as their “Windex man” on the offensive glass.
Myles scored five points against Hoover, but Monday he went for 14 points and eight rebounds. He had 11 points and six boards in the third quarter.
“I’m glad to be back,” he said. “It feels good to be home and being back with my team and friends and family that I missed so much. Can’t wait for the rest of the season.
“Tonight, coach told us to go out with the mentality that we always do and go out there and play your game no matter who you’re playing. The first game it was just trying to get the feeling in being back and today I just came out and hooped and did what I needed to do.”
Leeds 74, Lincoln 61: The host Golden Bears opened a four-point first-quarter lead, but couldn’t maintain the momentum and fell behind by nine at halftime. Mehki Jones and Josh Ruff led the Green Wave’s comeback, combining for 18 points in the second quarter.
Chris Davidson kept Lincoln at arm’s length in the fourth quarter with three 3-pointers. Davidson and Jones both had 17 in the game. Ruff finished with 14. Lincoln’s Brian Garrett led all scorers with 24 points.
