Mayfield brothers face off Thursday night, but say match wasn’t about them but the wrestlers on the mat

OXFORD – If you thought there was a budding sibling rivalry going forward in the Cleburne County-Oxford wrestling series, sorry. Jake and Rusty Mayfield just aren’t wired that way.
The brothers faced each other as head coaches for the first time Thursday night and although the match was as competitive as possible – Rusty’s Oxford team beat Jake’s Cleburne County squad 41-40 on the ninth tiebreaker – they’d both tell you it wasn’t about the guys in the corner chairs, but rather the guys battling it out on the mat.
“That doesn’t make any difference to me – it’s my team versus his team; it has nothing to do with my brother,” Rusty said. “As far as like a family thing, it’s not a family thing. It’s wrestling. We just don’t talk like that to each other. We never have.”
“We’re just trying to compete, let our kids get competition,” Jake said. “It’s all about our kids getting competition.”
The brothers coached with each other in Heflin for 14 years, but the split came last spring when Rusty took the Yellow Jackets’ job and the Tigers promoted his younger brother upon his departure.
Their match Thursday was the second of three in a quad match that also included Saks and Lincoln, and it couldn’t have been closer. The Tigers scored three pins and a decision in the final four bouts to tie the team score at 40. Both teams had the same number of match wins (seven), the same number of pins (five) and an equal number of forfeits (one).
It was decided by tiebreaker (i), most first-points scored in the bouts, and Oxford won that 13-10.
“They wrestled well; we didn’t wrestle well at all,” Rusty said. “Take nothing away from them, they’re a really good team. When you don’t wrestle well against good teams that’s what happens to you.
“We’ve got a lot of ninth-graders, a lot of tenth-graders on the varsity and actually we ran a lot of seventh- and eighth-graders out there tonight. We’ve got a lot of learning to do. A lot of these matches we’ll have to take our growing pains.”
The Yellow Jackets lost their first match of the night to Saks 39-36 and beat Lincoln in the getaway match 54-30. Cleburne County beat Lincoln 54-24 and beat Saks 66-12. Lincoln beat Saks 42-27.
Oxford’s reigning 6A 152 state champion Chase Hicks won all three of his matches by pin (3:26 total time). Cleburne County’s Austen Mayfield (106) and Anthony Champion (126) and Saks’ Treveon Bolton (220) also scored three pins. Oxford’s Kaleb Shelton (120) had two pins and a major decision.
