MUNFORD – For three quarters Ohatchee and Munford were locked in a tight game Monday night, but everything changed in the fourth.

Ohatchee went cold from the field and line and Munford went on a 28-2 tear to pull away for a 65-35 victory.

Connor Morgan had a big game for Munford, hitting six 3-pointers and scoring 25 points. He hit four 3s in the second half. Rashard Russell (15) and Jay Tuck (12) also scored in double figures for the Lions.

“We played with much better effort and intensity in the fourth, and the last couple minutes of the third,” Munford coach Michael Easley said.

Trey Pesnell led Ohatchee with 23 points. He scored the Indians’ only points of the fourth quarter.

Girls games

Handley edges Heflin in OT

HEFLIN – Cleburne County coach Todd Gable told his team before sending it onto the floor its area opener against Handley the game would come down to three things – turnovers, rebounds and free throws.

All three played a factor as Handley rallied from a big early deficit, tied the game at the end of regulation and edged the homestanding Lady Tigers in overtime 80-77.

Cleburne County struggled boxing out in the game and it played a factor in the way Gable played it at the end of regulation. It had three players foul out in the final two minutes of regulation and overtime and Handley went 23-of-35 at the line (with Grace Rittenhouse going 14-for-14) while Cleburne County was 20-of-28. And it made a couple costly mistakes down the stretch.

Gable’s team jumped out to a 19-6 lead in the first quarter behind 11 points from Haley Price, but Handley rallied behind Teanna Watts and Grace Rittenhouse and were back in the game by halftime.

“I was proud of the way we jumped on them,” Gable said. “Having seen some of their other games I knew that barrage was coming. I kept telling the girlls it was like a fight. We hit them early and they came back and hit us.”

Cleburne County was still leading when Handley called time out with 10 seconds left. Gable stressed not wanting to give up a game-tying 3 to Rittenhouse and even thought of fouling to keep Handley from even getting the shot, but knowing his team’s trouble boxing out in the game scuttled that idea. Ariana Kyles corralled a loose ball inside the arc, stepped back and hit the tying shot.

Handley’s top scorers – Rittenhouse (32), Takeriauna Mosley (16) and Kyles (14) – combined for 11 of their team’s 12 points in overtime. Brooklyn McDaniel scored all nine of Cleburne County’s overtime points.

McDaniel finished with 29 points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Price had 22 and freshman Faith Brown had 20, but fouled out in the fourth quarter.

“We let one slip away right here,” Gamble said. “But I told them I think the way y’all performed, we got on their radar because I didn’t think we were. It proved we could play with teams like that.”
