MUNFORD – People of a certain age remember Ben Casey as the good doctor on a prime-time drama in the black-and-white days of television. People nowadays know Ben Casey as a smooth operator for the Cleburne County boys basketball team.
Casey reached a milestone Thursday night, scoring his 1,000thcareer point during the Tigers’ 58-46 victory over Munford. The senior guard needed only three points coming in early in the first quarter on his way to a 26-point night.
“He’s known about it for a while,” Tigers coach Josh Perry said. “I’ve tried to keep it from him a little bit, but he’s known about it all year. He’s been trying to score them all in one night. I’m glad it’s over for him.”
Casey went over the milestone with two free throws early in the first quarter.
“That was the calmest he played after that,” Perry said. “The rest of the game he was very calm,” Perry said. “That’s the game we’ve been waiting on with him. He pressed early. I hope tonight that’s got him out of it.”
The Tigers (4-4) trailed in the first quarter, but Casey scored nine in the second to get them back to within one at halftime.
They took charge in the third quarter with Kyle Downey scoring eight in a 21-7 blitz. Casey scored 13 points in the second half, going 8-for-8 from the line. He was 11-for-11 from the line for the game.
“He’s definitely a scorer and he can drive and get to the free throw line,” Perry said. “That’s the second best part of his game when he’s not hitting 3s.”
The night set up for a double milestone. Cleburne County’s Brooklyn McDaniel was 17 points shy of her 1,000th point, but her night ended abruptly when she turned an ankle in the first quarter. She scored three points and her status going forward is uncertain.
“I think everybody was really excited for it, kind of anticipate it happening on that night,” Perry said. “I hate it for her.”
Still, the Lady Tigers got scoring from a lot of places and won 57-23.
Makenzie Frames led them with 16 points. Hailey Price had 14 points and Micah Pentecost had 12 points, on 6-of-9 shooting, and five rebounds.
The Lady Tigers will need that balance going forward. They have Anniston on the horizon and could be without their two leading scorers, McDaniel and freshman Faith Brown.
