ROANOKE – The Handley Lady Tigers showed their toughness in the Champions Thanksgiving Classic last night and they needed that same grit Friday against the reigning Class 4A state champion.
Grace Rittenhouse scored 16 points and Teanna Watts had 13 as the Lady Tigers served notice they were going to be a factor in their area, knocking off favorite Anniston 59-45.
Rittenhouse also grabbed eight rebounds. Jamiya Heard had eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
Anniston started fast, opening a 9-1 lead, then went cold. Handley answered with a 12-2 run to the end of the quarter and never trailed again. The Lady Bulldogs would threaten numerous times from there, but each time the Lady Tigers turned them back.
Anniston got within one with 3:43 left in the half, but Handley put together a 16-4 run that carried into the second half to build a 13-point lead with 5:11 left in the third quarter. Anniston closed its deficit to three two minutes later, but again the Lady Tigers pulled away.
“I am very proud of the way my girls stepped up and played tonight,” Handley coach Courtney Strain Screws said. “As everyone knows Anniston has a great program and a great team so this was a big one for us.”
Serena Hardy and Shiwanna Jackson each scored 10 for Anniston. Asia Barclay had nine points and nine rebounds. Jackson grabbed nine boards.
Tim Altork of the Randolph Leader contributed to this report.
