Jayme Hollingsworth doesn’t get teed-up often, but when he does it’s usually for a purpose.

The Coosa Christian girls coach got his first technical of the season Saturday in a particularly contentious part of the first half and it proved to be the impetus for the Lady Conquerors to collect a big area win on the road 49-47.

The coach’s T came after protesting a foul on Chloe Davidson a little too vehemently and was the second charged to the Lady Conquerors in a 30-second stretch late in the second quarter. The eight points Donoho scored through it all pushed the Lady Falcons to a nine-point lead with 1:29 left in the half and could have been the beginning of the end for the visitors from Etowah County.

But it also lit a fire under the Lady Conquerors (13-2). They responded with a couple 3-pointers to cut their deficit to three at halftime and opened the second half with a 12-2 run to take the lead before Donoho countered and it stayed close the rest of the game.

“Absolutely it helped pick up our energy a little bit,” Hollingsworth said. “You see a lot of coaches – (Kentucky’s John) Calipari – get T’d up a lot when they’re playing not quite to the level that they’re used to playing – credit Donoho for that (today). I thought after that our energy picked up.”

It certainly fired up Davidson. She upped her game in the second half and put the team on her shoulders after running partner Bella Millirons fouled out with six minutes to play and the game tied at 40.

Davidson scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but had 16 points in the second half. She scored six points in the last five minutes, including the game-tying basket with 4:30 to play and a free throw that gave the Lady Conquerors a 49-44 lead with 17.3 left.

“She’s a senior captain and has been through a lot of wars with us over the past five years,” Hollingsworth said. “You never want to lose 28 points a game just fouled out, but I thought she and Erin Snow both stepped up tremendously leading us, keeping us calm for the most part and making big shots down the stretch.”

“Our team saying is always if somebody’s out, it’s next man up,” Davidson said. “So, I was just thinking ‘next man up’ and I can do that. I’m going to step up and score and get my team going, and everybody just fought together and worked real hard as a team at the end.”

Anastasia and Victoria O’Neill both scored 14 points for Donoho. It was Anastasia’s 3-pointer at the buzzer that made it a two-point margin.

The game started a stretch of three area games in the next four days – Donoho, at JCA Monday and Faith Christian at home Tuesday – and the Lady Conquerors were approaching the swing like a dress rehearsal for the area tournament.

“We’re treating this like it’s the area tournament because it’s three big area games in four days,” Hollingsworth said. “This was a big one.”
