By East Alabama Sports Today
HEFLIN – The Cleburne County girls basketball team got back on the winning track and back to .500 Wednesday with a 54-22 victory over Clay Central.
Haley Price scored 18 points, Faith Brown had 15 and Brooklyn McDaniel 11 to lead the Lady Tigers (9-9), who shot 65 percent from the floor (24 of 37) as a team.
Ten players got in the game and six scored for the Lady Tigers.
“It was a good team win,” coach Todd Gable said. “I was glad everybody got to play and we gave them some good minutes. I thought we were real patient on offense tonight instead of forcing some shots we have in the past.”
Brown scored 13 of her points in the first half as the Lady Tigers opened 30-12 halftime lead. Price scored 12 in the third quarter when they outscored the Lady Vols 22-3.
McDaniel had eight rebounds, four assists and four steals. Brown had five steals.
“That game the other night with White Plains was very frustrating for us,” Gable said. “It was an area game and got us under .500. We beat them earlirr in the year and it was frustrating. We wanted to get back on that winning side.”
The game originally was scheduled for Monday, an early start before the national championship football game, but was postponed a few hours before tipoff when a water leak was discovered outside the gym. Officials postponed the game to Wednesday.

Boys games
CLEBURNE COUNTY 50, CLAY CENTRAL 43: The Tigers didn’t shoot it particularly well, but their defensive effort, especially in the fourth quarter, might have been as good as it has been all season.
The Tigers outscored the Vols 17-5 in the fourth quarter to erase a five-point deficit and snap a six-game losing streak.
“I don’t think it was one of our better offensive games, but defensively we were really flying around there in the fourth and I think we got them out of synch a little,” Tigers coach Josh Perry said. “We started trapping them a little bit more and … got them to settle for some shots they really didn’t want to take.”
Kyle Downey led the Tigers with 14 points, going 6-of-7 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Dee Prothro scored 12, including a pair of three-point plays in the third quarter Perry said “changed the momentum for us.”
The Tigers were 11-of-21 from the free throw line as a team in the fourth quarter and although, Perry said, they “left a lot there, we hit them when we needed to at the end.”
