White Plains’ Baker surpasses 1,000 career points, Piedmont’s Odam moves into No. 2 on school’s all-time scoring list
By East Alabama Sports Today
Two of Calhoun County’s most prolific scorers – White Plains’ Brody Baker and Piedmont’s Alex Odam – added to their career resumes Saturday.
Baker scored 16 points in the Wildcats’ 79-53 victory over Munford and his final field goal of the first half sent him over the 1,000-career-point barrier. He became the sixth 1,000-point scorer in Wildcats coach Chris Randall’s tenure, joining Josh Chatman, Josh Mickler, Jaylen Hill, Dylan Randall and Michael McGuirk on the list.
“I didn’t know I was that close until about a week ago,” Baker said. “It feels real good because I worked my butt off every day during practice and out of practice. It wasn’t given to me, I had to work for it.
“It wasn’t a goal when I first started. My goal was just to win … something – area championship, county championship, anything. Just to win something that would make me remember it for the rest of my life.”
He now has 1,001 career points – and counting.
Baker was one of three Wildcats to score in double figures. Walker Osteen scored 15 and Jesse Hubbard had 12. None of the starters played in the second half after the Wildcats opened a 41-18 halftime lead on the strength of a 23-3 second quarter.
The Wildcats hit 16 3-pointers in the game and the teams combined for 28. Hubbard and Osteen each hit four for White Plains. Jaquan Anderson led Munford with 16 points. He hit four 3-pointers.
Odam, meanwhile, scored 17 points in Piedmont’s 78-47 win over Pleasant Valley and moved into second place on the Bulldogs’ all-time scoring list.
He passed Randall Ridley, who scored 1,570 points in 71 games from 1976 to 1979. Odam now has 1,579 points in 95 games since taking the stage in 2017. Danny Bryant (1964-1967) is No. 1 on the list at 1,686.
Luke Bussey hit seven of the Bulldogs’ 10 3-pointers and scored a game-high 23 points. He was 7-of-14 from behind the arc and hit four in the Bulldogs’ 22-2 third quarter that broke open the game.
Omarion Foster, who Piedmont coach JoJo Odam has called the team’s “Swiss Army Knife,’ scored 16 in the game and Jadon Calhoun had 11.
