Piedmont’s Holloway, Ohatchee’s England bring state indoor track titles back to Calhoun County

BIRMINGHAM – Calhoun County produced two state champions, 10 medal winners and a dozen other point scorers in Friday’s session of the State Indoor Track Championship at the Birmingham Crossplex.

Piedmont’s Cody Holloway and Ohatchee’s Brock England brought state titles back to the county. Holloway won the 1A-3A boys 60-meter hurdles in 9.41. England won the 1A-3A boys high jump in a jump-off at 5-10.

“He tried it last year, liked it and I knew he would do well this year,” Ohatchee coach Casey Lipscomb said of England.

Ohatchee also produced four other medalists. Gracie George was second in the girls shot, Chris Ferguson and Brody Hester went 2-3 in the boys pole vault and Noah Fuller was third in the long jump.

The Indians finished fourth as a team, behind champion Winfield City, Catholic-Montgomery and Providence Christian. Piedmont tied for seventh.

Piedmont’s Jaden Cantrell was second in the 1A-3A boys shot.

Donoho’s Estella Connell reached the podium with a runner-up finish in the girls high jump (4-10). She also broke her own school record with a fourth-place finish in the triple jump and was fourth in the long jump.

The Lady Falcons scored 25 points and placed ninth in their first state indoor meet. Ohatchee’s girls placed 12thand Piedmont was 17th.

In the 4A-5A meet, White Plains’ state cross country champion Jake Moore finished second in the boys 800 and 1,600, breaking his school record in the 800 by seven seconds. Meanwhile, Savannah Yates was third in the girls pole vault. It was her seventh time on the podium in the event indoor and outdoor.

The White Plains boys tied for 10th in the team standings.
