Jaden Chatman was the ultimate cool under pressure, going 12-for-12 from the free throw line, including a pair with 18 seconds left to give White Plains the lead, and the Wildcats survived three rapid-fire shots in the closing seconds to earn a 69-66 victory over Handley to extend their season.
The Wildcats will travel to Anniston Friday for the Class 4A Area 9 championship game.
“We made plays down the stretch, knocked down free throws when we had to and got a couple stops late in the game,” White Plains coach Chris Randall said. “It was just a program culture win for us.”
Because it was a 2/3 seed game between two of top three teams in the area, one quality team was going to have its season end in the game. White Plains did the things it needed down to stretch to make sure it survived.
Playing at home helped. The Wildcats are 19-2 in the Palace on the Plains over the past two seasons.
“It’s different up there,” Chatman said. “Nobody wants to come here and play. It’s a tough atmosphere for the other team and we love it.”
White Plains had a 12-point lead early in the second half, but Handley hung a 30-spot on the Wildcats in the third quarter to take the lead. Jacob Wheeler hit a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter to put the Wildcats back on top and it went back and forth the rest of the game.
Handley led by three with 2:30 to play. Wheeler hit another 3 to tie the game and it stayed that way until Chatman’s free throws with 18 seconds left. The Tigers missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer, corralled the deep rebound near midfield and fired off two desperation 3s before the final horn.
“The last 18 seconds seemed to last 18 months,” Randall said.
Despite battling foul trouble all night and eventually fouling out, Brody Baker led White Plains with 16 points. Wheeler hit three 3-pointers and finished with 13, Walker Osteen had 14 and Quin Wilson nine.
The Wildcats also got some quality minutes off the bench from Garrett Wilson and Jesse Hubbard.
Chatman finished with 15 points. He had scored in double figures only twice all season, and they’ve come in the Wildcats’ last two games. He was 6-for-6 from the line in the fourth quarter.
“You can’t say enough about what Jaden Chatman did from the line,” Randall said. “He was 12-for-12 and had the ball in his hands a lot and it just seemed like the ball found him and he made clutch tough free throws and we needed every single one of them.
“They did a good job of taking Wheeler away, Brody was in a lot of foul trouble (and), Jaden knew he has to step up offensively. The fact Jaden kept driving it and drawing the contact and being patient to get to the free throw line, that’s what a captain and a senior are supposed to do. He’s a great leader for us.”

Oxford 70, Pell City 34
OXFORD – Pell City tried holding the ball for the first four minutes of the game against the Yellow Jackets defense and it worked well as it actually led 2-0 as the clock was ticking away.
Then Oxford coach Joel VanMeter pulled his team out of the zone and into a man-to-man half-court trap and full-court press and the game turned.
The Yellow Jackets (28-2) just erupted at that point and raced out to a 38-point lead before coasting into Friday night’s Class 6A Area 13 championship game. It was their 24th straight win.
“It was a good night, we won the game and got all our guys in. We just got to go to practice tomorrow and get better,” VanMeter said.
All 14 Oxford players got in the game with 11 scoring and four scoring in double figures. Rylan Houck poured in 15 points and pulled down six rebounds. Roc Taylor chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds. And Justin Moore had 12 points and five boards.
Kyler Wright, back from leg surgery way ahead of normal recovery time, had 11 points. He banged home three 3-pointers, giving him five in the last two games.
“He was averaging nine points a game before he had the leg surgery,” VanMeter said. “He can score a lot of points in a hurry when he is out there. We’ve got five guys off of the bench that are playing real well right now.” – Brant Locklier
