OXFORD — Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa head football coach Sam Adams has emerged as the favorite for the Oxford head coaching job, East Alabama Sports Today has learned, and the new man could be announced as early as Monday.
No offers have been made and the Oxford school board would have to vote to approve a new hire of this magnitude.
Adams was a finalist for the job the last time it was open and was a finalist recently for the Auburn High School job.
Adams coached alongside and succeeded current Ohatchee head coach Scott Martin at Hillcrest in 2014. He is 56-29 in seven seasons with the Patriots, taking them to the playoffs six times (missing only in 2019) – twice as a No. 1 seed and three times as a No. 2 – and always making it to the second round. They went to the semifinals in 2017.
He has experience on both the college and high school level.
Interestingly, he has called the shots in a game in Lamar Field before. He brought the Patriots to Oxford for the 2017 season opener, where the Yellow Jackets won 21-0.
Oxford athletics director Larry Davidson said Wednesday when reached for an update on the search that school officials were “in the process of finishing up” the search and any additional comment would come when they were ready to make an announcement.
The school is said to have interviewed more than a dozen candidates for the job. No school officials at any time would confirm the identity of any candidates.
Last week Davidson said “we feel great about candidates and timelines. We’re going to have to navigate through testing dates and spring breaks, but we are confident we will have someone in place within a good timeframe.”
Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa is on spring break until Monday. Understandably, any head coach taking a new position would like the courtesy of informing his players personally of any change.
