ODENVILLE – Alexandria coach Brian Hess was hoping his team’s championship showing in the Calhoun County Softball Tournament would carry over to the big area games it has schedule this week and apparently it has.
Rylee Gattis followed her MVP performance in the tournament with another big outing and the Lady Cubs supported her by scoring in every inning, pounding St. Clair County in six innings, 12-0.
Gattis went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, and pitched a six-inning complete-game four-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts in the circle.
Christian Hess also had a big game at the plate for Alexandria. She went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI doubles and four RBIs. Ashley Phillips had two hits.
Pleasant Valley 12, Ohatchee 4
OHATCHEE – Pleasant Valley pitcher Leah Patterson picked up her 200th strikeout of the season and the Lady Raiders bounced back from their tough loss in the county tournament title game with a nine-run fourth inning.
Patterson, who battled Gattis pitch-for-pitch in the county final, gave up one hit and struck out seven in three innings. She picked up the milestone with her inning-ending second strikeout of the first inning. She now has 205 strikeouts for the season.
PV sent 13 batters to the plate in its big inning. Sydney Beason had a two-run double in the outburst and Sara Morgan Blohm had a two-rrun single.
Beason went 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Blohm and Bailey Harris both had two hits and two RBIs.
The Lady Raiders (23-12) host Piedmont Thursday looking to clinch home field advantage in their area tournament.
