SUMITON – Faith Christian’s first trip to the state baseball playoffs in nine years after an historic season was a short stay.
The Lions took a 20-win regular-season record into the opening round of the Class 1A playoffs Thursday, but lost two five-inning games to Sumiton Christian 12-1 and 24-2.
Sumiton jumped on them early in both games and coasted. The Eagles scored five runs in each of the first two innings of the first game and, taking advantage of 13 Faith errors, had two seven-run innings and a nine-run eruption in the nightcap.
The Lions were held to four hits in the first game and two in the second. Brodie Dodson had two hits in the first game.
They scored a run in the third inning of the first game on Brady Whitworth’s RBI single and two in the first inning of the nightcap when the Eagles misplayed Alex Almanza’s two-out fly to right.
Sumiton’s Josh Allred went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs in the opener and went 4-for-5 with four RBIs in the nightcap. Jordan Robertson drove in three runs in the first game and Ashton Whiten drove in four in the second.
