Allen pitches Alexandria to 6-3 win over John Carroll to win playoff series
By East Alabama Sports Today
BIRMINGHAM — Freshman Andrew Allen pitched 6 1/3 strong innings and the offense broke open a tie game with three in the fifth as Alexandria dumped John Carroll 6-3 to win Game 3 and win its Class 5A playoff series.
The Valley Cubs will host Ardmore Friday.
Allen pitched into the seventh, then gave way to senior Ryan Ritchie, who got the last two outs on a pitcher-to-second double play against on a payoff pitch to the only hitter he faced.
The Cubs jumped on top 2-0 in the first inning and held that lead through three. The Cavaliers tied it 2-2 in the fourth.
Alexandria loaded the bases with none out in the top of the fifth and scored three runs to take the lead for good.
Ian Cartwright’s sacrifice fly brought home the tying-breaking run and Eli Barnes followed with a two-run double. Sam Wade, who got hit five times in Friday’s doubleheader split, went 3-for-4.
