Sprayberry to coach White Plains football team at Homecoming as Tyree quarantines with COVID-19
By East Alabama Sports Today
Clay Sprayberry will be coaching the White Plains football team this week as head coach Chandler Tyree quarantines under COVID-19 protocols. The Wildcats host Elmore County for Homecoming.
Tyree confirmed he has contracted the virus. He is expected to be sidelined at least until next Wednesday. No players or other coaches have been impacted.
“Coach Sprayberry has been on staff a long time, been at White Plains a long time; he was on the last playoff team here,” White Plains principal Andy Ward said, confirming Sprayberry’s coaching role. “They have been working hard over the weekend to make sure the kids have the necessary things to win the football game Friday night.
“I don’t see any changes. We’re going to do the same things as if Coach Tyree were here. I have 100 percent confidence he’s going to be great with them and we’re going to go out Friday night and expect to win the football game.”
The Wildcats are 1-4 and have lost three straight region games since beating Donoho in their home opener. They beat Elmore County last year 21-0.
Tyree is in his third season as the Wildcats’ head coach. He is 8-17, but each of his first two teams posted more victories than the season before.
Here are Friday night’s game involving Calhoun County teams:
Anniston at Center Point
Cleburne County at Alexandria
Elmore County at White Plains
Geraldine at Saks
Hamilton at Wellborn
Jacksonville Christian at Evangel
Jacksonville at Piedmont
Oxford at Gadsden City
Weaver at Armuchee (Ga.)
