JACKSONVILLE –
The Pleasant Valley girls have high expectations for the basketball season ahead and they couldn’t have gotten off to a stronger start.

The Lady Raiders got 20 points from Rylee Haynes, 13 from Lily Henry, played everybody and crushed Ashville 70-23 in their season opener.

The Lady Raiders applied pressure early, forced turnovers and converted them into a big early lead. In all, nine players scored for PV. Henry scored all her points in the second quarter.

“The effort was there; that’s all I could ask for,” PV coach Colton Morris said. “They got after it from the first to the last.

“There are a lot of expectations on this team. It’s a senior-led team that has been playing together for a while. If we can stay healthy, we ought to be able to have a pretty decent year.”

Their start already is better than a year ago. The Lady Raiders lost their first eight games.

Hokes Bluff 51, Weaver 11: Chloe Rule scored 17 points, Kileigh Blackwell had 10 and the Lady Eagles held Weaver to three field goals the entire game. Both teams struggled early, but the Lady Eagles were finally able to get on track, scored the first 11 points of the game and continued to pull away.

PV boys beaten at buzzer

JACKSONVILLE – Ashton Vann hit a wild 3-pointer at the buzzer after barely avoiding a backcourt violation and Ashville rallied from a 13-point second-half deficit to stun Pleasant Valley 60-58 and spoil the Raiders’ season opener.

PV led by 13 late in the third quarter and by nine going into the fourth, but missing the front end of one-and-ones and having big man Garrett Cranmer foul out with 6:30 to play allowed the Bulldogs back in the game.

The Raiders led by two with 4.5 seconds to play when they missed the front end of a one-and-one. Ashville rebounded, burned some time and then threw a long pass to the wing. The Bulldogs saved it from going out of bounds, slinging it towards midcourt. Vann caught it just over the midline and soon as he landed launched his shot that found the bottom of the basket.

“I really felt other than the free throws I think they played at their maximum potential,” PV coach Brad Hood said. “I felt like a bunch of guys stepped up and played at a high level. We gave up only two offensive rebounds the entire game. That’s effort.”

Vann led the Bulldogs with 15 points, 10 in the fourth quarter. Jonah Carden had 12 points (all on 3-pointers) – nine in the fourth quarter – and Elijah Turner had 12 (all in the second half). PV’s Zeke Johnson led all scorers with 24 points, 19 in the second half.

Hokes Bluff 63, Weaver 37: Jordan Presley scored 27 points and the Eagles pulled away from a close game by outscoring their hosts 35-12 in the middle two quarters. Presley hit three 3-pointers and went 7-for-8 from the line in the stretch as the Eagles extended a 17-12 first-quarter lead to 52-24 entering the fourth. Tristan Brown led Weaver with 13 points.
