GADSDEN –
Jacksonville got back on the winning track Thursday night, beating a Class 7A opponent on the road despite missing one of its best players.

Guard John Broom was a last-minute scratch for the Golden Eagles after falling ill during the day, but his teammates more than made up the difference in an 86-67 rout of Gadsden City.

“To be honest with you, we just handled their pressure,” Jacksonville coach Shane Morrow said. “We knew that was going to have to happen. The twins came in and played really, really well for us and we brought up a ninth-grader, Devin Barksdale, and he handled the ball really well.

“Just overall we handled their pressure, which is what you’ve got to do when you play somebody like Coach (Reginald) Huff’s team. If you can handle it, you’ve got a chance. We weathered the storm there early on and handled a couple of their runs.”

Cade Phillips, the 6-8 transfer from Westbrook Christian, returned to Gadsden and led the Golden Eagles with 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting, 12 rebounds and seven blocked shots.

Twins Caden and Cam Johnson combined for 39 points on 14-of-38 shooting and 18 rebounds (Caden had 21 and 7, Cam 18 and 11). Julian Hill had 12 points, Ethan Duke grabbed 11 rebounds and Barksdale had no turnovers in 24 minutes.

“The game the other night (its 59-52 loss to 7A Spain Park), I’m not going to hold that against them,” Morrow said of the twins. “They played football and it just ended last Friday. They were huge tonight.

“We just played better. We’re still learning. It’s November. We’re still trying to figure things out. We’re playing a different style than what they’re used to. It worked out for us tonight. We just have to keep getting better.”

MUNFORD – Connor Morgan scored eight of his team-high 21 points in overtime, including two of his five 3-pointers, to lift the Lions to their second victory of the season.

Morgan was one of three double-figure scorers for Munford. Jaquan Anderson had 18 points and Lathan Stephens hit four 3s and had 16.

The Lions (2-0) led the whole game until Weaver tied it at 50 with a little more than a minute to play. The Bearcats (1-2) had a chance to win it with six seconds left, but Munford disrupted the play out of a time out and denied them a good shot.

The Lions went up by four in overtime and Armane Burton banked in a 3 for the final margin. Munford was 5-of-7 from the field in the extra session.

“Our kids played hard all night and our crowd was great and gave the team a huge lift,” Munford coach Michael Easley said. “Connor and Jaquan played good and only sat out one minute each the entire night and Lathan hit some big shots for us when they collapsed on them.”

Weaver’s Tristan Brown led all scorers with 27 points, 18 in the second half and overtime. Jeffrey Miles had 15 and Burton’s last-second 3 gave him 14.
All three had double-doubles with Brown dishing 10 assists and grabbing seven rebounds. Burton pulled down 15 rebounds and Miles 10. The Bearcats were 19-of-30 from the free throw line.

“Nobody likes losing, but we had a lot of wins tonight,” Weaver coach Beau Winn said.
