Girls roundup: Oxford, Spring Garden will play for Championships Girls Classic title; Cleburne County wins its opener, PV keeps rolling

Oxford and Spring Garden produced one of the tightest games in last year’s Champions Girls Classic opening round. This year they’ll be playing for the tournament championship Tuesday night.

The Lady Jackets and Lady Panthers earned spots in the 7:30 p.m. title game with convincing victories Monday.

Oxford ran past Alexandria 67-30, while Spring Garden took out White Plains 56-14.

Oxford jumped out 40-17 halftime lead on Alexandria and never gave the Lady Cubs a chance to mount aa comeback similar to the one they used to beat Hokes Bluff on Saturday.

Xai Whitfield led the Lady Jackets’ early charge with 15 of her team-high 19 points in the first half. Justice Woods had 11 points in the game and Lauren Ellard had nine of three 3-pointers. Nine different players scored for Oxford (5-0).

Ace Austin led Spring Garden’s offense with 22 points. Abby Stewart and Libby Brown each had nine. The Lady Panthers’ defense has held their opponent to single digits in seven of their eight tournament quarters.

OHATCHEE 41, HOKES BLUFF 37: Jorda Crook scored eight of her 17 points in the second half and the Lady Indians went 11 for 17 from the free throw line in the final two quarters to rally from a seven-point halftime deficit.  It was the second tournament game in a row Hokes Bluff lost a halftime lead. Ohatchee outscored the Lady Eagles 13-2 in the third quarter to get back in the game.

COLLINSVILLE 43, JACKSONVILLE 26: Tyla Tatum scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Collinsville pulled away with a 19-5 second quarter. Ashley Grant led Jacksonville with 14 points.

Glencoe Thanksgiving Classic

GLENCOE – Less than a week after public celebrating her place as Cleburne County’s first female Division I scholarship signee, Brooklyn McDaniel opened her season with another double-double to lead the Lady Tigers to a 44-38 victory over Glencoe.

With 24 points and 17 rebounds, the 6-foot Jax State-bound McDaniel pushed her career numbers to 1,251 points and 1,234 rebounds. She was 7-of-16 from the field.

Hailey Price inched closer to the 1,000-point plateau with nine points. Faith Brown had five points, six rebounds and four steals.
