Cade Phillips had played in a neighborhood rivalry where he went to school before, but it certainly was never anything like this.

The junior post experienced his first Jacksonville-Alexandria battle in Larry Ginn Gym Tuesday night and it was as intense as coach Shane Morrow told the players it would be.

The Golden Eagles might have had their way with a Valley Cubs team playing its first game of the year early, but in this game, in this gym, nothing is as safe as it seems. By the end of the night, they had a real battle on their hands.

What once was an 18-point lead was down with six twice in the final minute before Jacksonville put it away 71-62.

“I’ve played in a lot of intense games in my life, so this was just another game, really,” Phillips said. “You could feel the hostility in the crowd … the student sections are going back and forth at each other, but that’s the only real difference. It’s still the same court, same rim, same ball.

“You feel them bearing down, but if you stay within your head and play your game you really should be able to handle that pressure.”

Phillips played his game and came close to a triple-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots — and still felt he could have, should have, done more.. Teammate John Broom had 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, and Caden Johnson had nine points, 10 boards and three assists.

A 13-0 run in the first quarter and an 11-0 run in the second helped the Golden Eagles open a 37-19 halftime lead that Phillips agreed “should have been safe.”

But much like in their early-season loss to Spain Park, the Golden Eagles had trouble in the second half against Alexandria’s zone. They did score more points in the half this time, but they had to work for them.

The 3-pointers they took against it weren’t bad shots, they just weren’t hitting them. They were 10-of-39 from beyond the arc.

But there was more to it than just the shooting. There were things the Golden Eagles just weren’t getting done.

“They really tried to slow it down with that zone,” Phillips said. “We shot like 25 percent from the 3-point line. That’s not great but we still should be able to outrun zone and score more than we did in the second half. We were trying to shoot them out of the zone and we weren’t hitting shots.”

With that opening, had the Valley Cubs been sharper at the free throw line, it may have turned out differently. They missed their last six free throws in the fourth quarter while they were trying to get back in it and were only 7-of-22 for the game.

Still, they were able to get back in it thanks to a big game from D’Anthony Walton. He scored 33 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

Walton had 11 points in a 16-6 run that opened the second half and got the Cubs to within eight for the first time midway through the third quarter. Jacksonville ran the lead back to 16, but the Cubs brought it back to eight again with 4:24 left in the game.

“I think we were a lot more competitive in the second half,” Alexandria coach Jason Johnson said. “I did not feel like we were competing for loose balls and rebounds and things like that (in the first half).

“In the second half we made couple of adjustments and started making some runs, started competing. That was the good thing. We had a little better fight in the second half and gave ourselves a chance, so I’m proud of that, but we’ve still got a long way to go.”

Walton got the Cubs to within six twice in the final minute, first on a dunk with 1:00 left (65-59) and then with the last of his four 3-pointers with 25 seconds to go (68-62). The closer they came, the louder it got.

“We thought it’d be a hostile environment, we were ready for it,” Morrow said. “I told them this is what you play the game for, this is what you want to do. You want to be in these kinds of games.

“We played well for probably three, three and a half quarters. I told them before the game they were going to go on a run, we’ve just got to match it. I’m not disappointed with the way we played. It’s still a learning curve; we’re still learning how to play the way we want to play. We’ve probably only had about five practices with all our players.”
