LINCOLN – Rylee Gattis was on top of her game during Alexandria’s run to the Final Four of the Gulf Coast Classic II last week in Gulf Shores and she was delivering more of the same Tuesday.
To put it simply, she was perfect.
The Lady Cubs’ senior threw a seven-inning perfect game in a 14-0 area victory over Lincoln. She threw a perfect game against the Lady Bears last year in the area tournament, too.
“It felt good to have my sister (Chloe) behind the plate and the defense behind my back,” Gattis said. “I didn’t strike everybody out; of course, I had to have everybody’s effort behind me.”
Gattis needed 92 pitches get through the 21 batters she faced. She struck out 12. She went to 3-2 counts on two batters. One she retired on a fastball away that was hit back to her and the other she struck out with a curve, a pitch she throws “more often than you’d think” in that situation.
“I was confident in the fastball so I threw it,” she said. “I have a lot of confidence in my curveball as well. My pitching coaches have made me confident in all of my pitches, but I also have confidence that whatever I throw my defense will back me up no matter what.”
And the defense made two nice plays to preserve the gem. On one, Gattis took a comebacker off her calf but shortstop Ashley Phillips collected the carom and threw on to first. On the other, Christian Hess made a leaping grab on a liner above her head.
The lineup supported her with an 18-hit attack. Hess homered, had four hits and drove in five runs. Phillips also homered and had three RBIs. And Pressley Slaton went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Jill Cockrell, Rylee Gattis and Addie Jennings had two hits apiece.
