Piedmont 14-13, Pleasant Valley 4-1: The Bulldogs used a big inning in each game to take control.

The Bulldogs snapped 2-2 tie in the opener with seven in the top of the fifth, capped by Jake Austin’s bases-loaded triple. They scored eight in the top of the first in the nightcap, with Jack Hayes hitting a two-run double and Max Hanson hitting a two-run single. 

In the first game, PV retired the first batter of the fifth, then the next eight Piedmont hitters reached safely. The first seven Piedmont batters of the nightcap reached base and score. Austin went 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

Hayes, Noah Reedy and McClane Mohon had big doubleheaders. Hayes went 4-for-8 with a second-game homer and five RBIs. Reedy went 4-for-8 with six runs. Mohon went 5-for-6 with six runs and four RBIs. 

Austin Estes stole two more bases in the twin bill, extending his single-season school record to 32.

Saks 12-7, Weaver 4-19: Rickey Garrett hit a leadoff homer and Clay Rucker and Mason Jairrels both went 3-for-3 as the Wildcats won the opening game of their doubleheader to clinch the area series. Rucker drove in three runs and Jairrels plated two.

Weaver took advantage of 12 walks and seven errors to win the nightcap and salvage a game in the series. Christian Martuello went 3-for-3, while Elijah Smith and, Devin Anderson, Rabon Kirk and Tristan Brown all drove in a pair of runs.

Oxford 11, Central 1: Sam Robertson, Peyton Watts and Hudson Gilman hit run-scoring doubles to account for all the runs in a six-run fourth inning that gave the Jackets a 9-1 lead in the Spring Break Experience game. Robertson got it started with a two-run double, Watts kept it going with an RBI double and Gilman capped with a three-run double.

Dalton Fink pitched the first four innings to get the win. He allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out three. He also hit a triple.

Munford 9-14, Cleburne County 5-4: The Lions rallied from a 4-0 first-inning deficit with runs in each of the next five innings to win the first game of their doubleheader and clinch the area series, then completed the sweep in the nightcap.

Connor Fisher hit a two-run double in the second inning to get the Lions’ rally in the opener started. The Lions took the lead for good with two in the third. Kannon Robertson had two hits for Cleburne County.

In the nightcap, Corbin Smith went 3-for-4, Graham Callahan went 2-for-2, and Kade Keith and Caleb Watts each drove in two runs. Five Munford pitchers gave up four hits and struck out 12, but walked 10.

All the Lions have to do now is split with Handley to claim the area championship.

Childersburg 15-15, Wellborn 5-5: The Tigers swept the doubleheader with identical scores to sweep the series.

Brennan Talley and JoJo Wyatt both went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Wellborn in the opener. Cam Ingram and Ethan Carroll both had two hits in the nightcap.

The Panthers scored runs in the first inning of both games — four in the nightcap — but couldn’t hold those leads.

Softball

Piedmont 13, Ohatchee 7: Cacey Brothers went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Emily Farmer homered and the Lady Bulldogs took control with a five-run first inning. Winning pitcher Savannah Smith and Armani Perry both had a pair of hits for Piedmont (8-5), while Farmer, Cayla Brothers, Zhayla Walker and Ava Pope drove in two runs apiece.

Kylee Barnes and Mackenzie Luna hit home runs for Ohatchee.

Pleasant Valley 11, Weaver 6: Gracee Ward and Lily Henry both hit two-run homers in a seven-run fourth inning that put the Lady Raiders ahead for good.

Weaver scored five in the third to take a 6-0 lead, but PV started its comeback with four in the bottom of the inning.

Taylor Nix and Henry had two hits apiece for Pleasant Valley. Sydney Bitzer, Madison Atchley and Hanna Hise (two RBI) all had two for the Lady Bearcats.

Cleburne County 9, Alexandria 3: Jill Cockrell and Rylee Gattis both went 2-for-4 for the Lady Cubs.

JCA 17, Faith Christian 2: The Lady Thunder broke away from a 2-2 tie with eight runs in the third inning and added seven in the fourth to set up the run rule. Krymson Clay struck out five over four innings and was one of five JCA players with two hits – Clay, Addy Lee, Kara Grace, Ella Kines and Hannah Clayton.

Lincoln 5, Munford 0: Mya Skinner pitched a four-hit complete-game shutout with eight strikeouts. She also had two hits, including a three-run homer in the third inning. Jazlin Mitchell hit a leadoff homer.

Soccer

Donoho girls 3, Collinsville 0: The teams played even for a half, the Lady Falcons made some adjustments at halftime and Erin Turley broke a scoreless tie in the first three minutes of the second half. Kathleen Seals scored Donoho’s other two goals. Maggie Wakefield posted another shutout.

Faith Christian 6, Munford 1: Nic Goodgame scored five goals, raising his season total to 18 in nine matches. Freshman Mason Blackstone scored the Lions’ other goal. The Faith girls lost 2-0.
