Weaver’s Ledbetter scores first career victory in 3A Sectional; White Plains girls edge Alexandria in 4A-5A, PV girls win, Piedmont boys advance
By East Alabama Sports Today
MONTGOMERY – When Nick Ledbetter qualified to play in the state tournament last year it felt like a win, but it wasn’t quite.
He discovered just how good it feels to win Tuesday.
Ledbetter became the first Weaver golfer to win a tournament when he shot 3-over-par 75 to win medalist honors at the Class 3A boys sectional at Lagoon Park. He won by one shot over Sam Lee of Trinity.
“It’s different, way different, knowing that I was the lowest score out of everybody instead of the second lowest to make it through to state,” the junior said. “It felt great to make it to state (last year), but knowing I won the tournament individually makes it special.”
How special was it?
“it means a whole lot for him to finally pull through,” Weaver coach Justin Brown said. “It’s huge for him, it’s huge for the team and it’s huge for our golf program. Nick is our leader. Any time you see your leader succeed at something he’s tried so hard to do it’s satisfying.”
Ledbetter’s winning round had four birdies and seven bogeys. He birdied his first hole of the day and made three in a five-hole stretch on the back nine with two bogeys in between. He also had four chips that hit the hole but didn’t fall.
“I hit the ball insanely well,” he said.
Not only did Ledbetter qualify for the Sub-State next week at Rock Creek in Fairhope, the Bearcats finished third as a team to advance.
White Plains girls win
GUNTERSVILLE – The White Plains girls got rounds of 80 from Isabel Rogers, Abby Gattis and Baylie Webb to win the Class 4A-5A Section 3 title at Eagles Nest GC. Alexandria was second at 249.
Alexandria’s Emma Ray and Oneonta’s Savannah Sandlin shot 79 to share the lead at the end of 18 holes, with Sandlin making par on the first extra hole to win a sudden death playoff for medalist. Calhoun County champion Lauren Sechrest shot 81 for Alexandria.
Piedmont boys advance, PV girls win
GADSDEN – Jacob McCurdy posted a 91 and Trent Young 99 to lead the Piedmont boys to a second-place finish out of seven teams in their sectional at Twin Bridges to advance to the Sub-State. The Bulldogs shot 394 as a team and made the cut with six shots to spare. Westbrook Christian won the team title (336).
Pleasant Valley and Piedmont finished 1-2 in the girls sectional. The Lady Raiders shot 301 as a team, led by Gracie Davis’ 96. Ellie Cothran of Brindlee Mountain was medalist with a 66.
