Bulldogs lead the way

Anniston boys win 4×400 relay to clinch school’s first outdoor track state title; White Plains girls share 4A red map

GULF SHORES – Christian Myles has been calling Anniston track coach Lisa Howard Holland “mom” ever since he started running for the team in seventh grade. It didn’t take long for the handle to catch on with the rest of his teammates.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs gave their “mom” the greatest Mother’s Day present they could ever deliver. They brought their coach and the program the first boys outdoor track state championship in school history when they edged Bibb County for the Class 4A state crown.
The Bulldogs scored 75 points and closed it out by winning the 4×400 relay in school record time (3:25.32). They took a two-point lead on Bibb County going into the race, but still had to get through the seeded heat without incident and beat Bibb County’s 3:31 from the slower first heat to seal it.
“It was the best feeling ever,” sprinter Jayden Lewis said. “She came up and cried and hugged me and I told her it was for her. It’s a great Mother’s Day present. In my word, she’s the GOAT, for real.”
It was the fifth outdoor state title won by a Calhoun County boys team, seventh all-time, and first since Piedmont won the Class 3A crown in 2014. It was Anniston’s 14th state title in school history.
What made it even more satisfying is Bibb County was the team the Bulldogs finished second to here last year. This year, they had more weapons.
“This is extremely big,” Howard Holland said. “I think we were so hungry for it because we got so close to it (last year). We had some ups and downs, but we pulled through and that was the best thing about it. We did it together as a team. It wasn’t one individual who did something spectacular. Everybody put in the effort together to make sure we were successful.
“We had some points we counted that didn’t come through, but we got a lot of points that weren’t calculated that people stepped up. It was a team effort. Every minute they were asking what are the points, where we were, what do we need to do.”
The Bulldogs trailed the Choctaws by five points going into the 800, but Myles won the race with a personal best 1:57.30 – diving over the line at the finish – to give them the team lead. They still had to run a clean race in the relay, but were confident stepping into the blocks.
“Malachi Taylor called my phone right before the race and said, ‘Ma, it’s in the bag,’” Howard Holland said.
Then the team of JaVon Thomas, Lewis, Myles and Jaylon Cunningham ran two 50 splits and two 51s to break the school record they set the week before and start the Mother’s Day celebration early. It also was Thomas and twin sister LaZadia’s birthday.
“It’s legendary,” Lewis said. “It’s crazy to think about, but we did it. All the hard work we put in paid off.”
The White Plains girls finished tied for second in Class 4A. The Lady Wildcats held the lead going into Saturday, but were outnumbered in the remaining events and finished tied with Randolph.
“We knew it was going to be tough because we didn’t have anybody in hurdles,” White Plains coach Bradley Dawson said. “In the 100 alone five of the eight were Randolph and (eventual champion) Brooks, and the top two in the 300 were Brooks and Randolph. We just knew we had to perform in the 800 and hold serve in the 4×4.”
Anna Strickland and double winner Maddyn Conn went 1-6 in the 800 and gave the Lady Wildcats a five-point lead over Randolph going into the 4×400. All they had to do was stay ahead of the Lady Raiders in the relay to take second outright. Randolph finished fourth to pick up five points and White Plains missed the top eight by 15-hundreths of a second.
“It was a pretty fast heat,” Dawson said. “We didn’t run as fast as we needed to, but the time we ran today was the best we could.”
Calhoun County produced nine total state champions and 28 athletes on the podium at the two championship meets.
