South stars rise

AHSAA South baseball stars score shutout, rally to tie nightcap; Oxford’s Robertson, Holtville’s Silas named MVPs

MONTGOMERY – It was a good day for infielders named Sam in the AHSAA North-South All-Star Baseball Game Monday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
The South won the first game 5-0 and rallied from an early deficit to tie the shortened nightcap, 2-2.
Oxford shortstop Sam Robertson was named MVP of the North squad, while Holtville shortstop Sam Silas was MVP for the South.
Robertson had a hit and a stolen base in each game and scored one of the runs in the nightcap for the North. Silas had two hits in the first game and drew a walk in the nightcap.
Another Sam, North second baseman Sam Patrick of Oneonta, went 3-for-3 in the doubleheader.
Silas slugged as triple and single in the opening game. The North jumped to a 2-0 lead in the second game, with Robertson and Piedmont’s Jack Hayes scoring the runs, but the South rallied to tie it 2-2. The nightcap was shortened to five innings due to a rain delay earlier in the doubleheader.
Four South pitchers combined to hurl as three-hitter in the shutout win. Stanhope Elmore’s Zach Stephens started for the South and pitched 2 2/3 no-hit innings striking out four. Harrison Mims of Providence Christian hurled one inning, winning pitcher Bryson Goff of Saraland allowed all three North hits in 2 1/3 innings of work but also struck out three. Drew Jolley of Prattville pitched the final inning striking out two to close out the shutout.
The South managed nine hits off six North pitchers. In addition to Silas, Saint James’ Clint Shores also had two hits and an RBI. Stephens also socked a double and Cole Blaylock of UMS-Wright had one hit and an RBI.
The North’s three hits were delivered by Robertson, Patrick and Carter Sheehan of Shelby County.
With the South win and tie, it closed the North’s edge in the series, which began in 1997, to 23-16=3.
Tuesday’s All-Star slate includes boys’ and girls’ cross-country races at Gateway Park beginning at 7:30 a.m. The North-South boys’ and girls’ tennis competition gets underway at 5 p.m. at Lagoon Park Tennis Center. The North-South girls’ basketball all-star game tips off at 5 p.m., at the Cramton Bowl MultiPlex and the boys’ game will be at 6:45 p.m.
The North-South All-Star softball doubleheader will be played Wednesday at Lagoon Park beginning at 4 p.m. North-South girls’ and boys’ soccer will be played Wednesday at 5 and 7 p.m., at Emory Folmar Soccer Complex. Volleyball closes out the North-South All-Star series Thursday at 4 p.m., at the MultiPlex.
GOLF: Weaver’s Nick Ledbetter and partner Jake Temple of Haleyville was part of a 5-0 North sweep in the All-Star golf matches at Arrowhead Golf Club.
Ledbetter and Temple defeated Jackson Williams of Smiths Station and Jackson Bailey of Enterprise 11-7. The North won the match 62.5-27.5 to remain unbeaten (3-0) in the newly established series.
The North girls went 3-0-1 and beat the South 47-25. The North girls lead the series 2-1.
