TALLADEGA – Wade Thompson threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more and L.J. Burns rushed for 326 yards and two scores as White Plains throttled Talladega 48-14 Thursday night to snap a four-game losing streak.
“We needed this one really bad,” White Plains coach Chandler Tyree said. “We have battled injuries and some other things and our kids needed something good to happen and they earned this one.”
Thompson scored on a pair of quarterback sneaks and threw touchdown passes to Brandon Hahm (32 yards) and Rodney Peery (46 yards). Burns scored on runs of 54 and 16 yards and had two other runs of 66 and 41 yards that didn’t find the end zone. Freshman P.J. Holloway scored the Wildcats’ other touchdown on a 77-yard run late in the game.
“Wade was a true game manager and made some big plays,” Tyree said.
The win is sure to build confidence within the Wildcats’ young lineup. They started three freshman on defense and two freshmen and an eighth-grader on offense.
“Defensively we gave up a (52-yard touchdown run) on the first drive of the game, but we played really well after that and didn’t give up anything until the last (75-yard) drive of the game against our young guys, who really competed,” Tyree said. “The O-line and D-line won us the game. It was the best our O-line has played all year.”
Thompson led the defense with tackles. Taylor Green had eight tackles and a sack. Ashton Wallace had eight tackles and Hahm and Hayden Barksdale had six apiece.
Donoho 28, Winterboro 20
WINTERBORO – Lucas Elliott threw a 10-yard halfback pass for what proved to be the winning touchdown and then shot through the lined to stop a quarterback sneak at the goal line as time expired to give the Falcons their second straight win.
The Falcons (3-3) never trailed in the game. Will Folsom threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Logan Melton to cap the game’s opening drive and the Falcons were off and running.
Folsom connected with Melton on a 9-yard TD pass to give Donoho a 14-6 lead. Folsom’s third TD pass of the game, a 23-yarder to Richard Goad, gave the Falcons a 21-12 halftime lead.
Folsom was 18 of 32 passing in the game for 255 yards. Melton caught five passes for 64 yards.
Goad recovered a fumble and returned it to the Winterboro 28 leading to Elliott’s touchdown toss that gave Donoho a 28-12 lead. Goad caught five passes for 119 yards and recorded 11.5 tackles (three for loss).
In addition to his touchdown pass, Elliott rushed for 68 yards, caught four passes for 35 and returned three kids for 48 yards. Plus, he had 12.5 tackles on defense.
