Opening night nailbiters

Donoho’s boys win on the road in overtime, Piedmont’s girls win at the buzzer; Weaver swept at Hokes Bluff

By East Alabama Sports Today

TARRANT – Donoho’s new basketball season might have gotten off to a rocky start, but when it got down to crunch time the Falcons were as sharp as ever.

Sam Johnson and Drew Williamson scored 16 points apiece and the Falcons dominated overtime to win its season opener on the road, 60-50 over Tarrant Monday night.

The Falcons had too many turnovers early in the game for coach Korielle Beavers’ liking and later lost a double-digit lead, but they made a defensive stop in the final eight seconds to send the game into overtime and then outscored the 3A Wildcats by 10 in the extra session.

“We started off kind of sluggish and had a lot of turnovers to begin with, but we settled in in the second half and came up to overtime and kind of took off,” Beavers said. “We said we’ve got four minutes, just go out and execute and it just clicked in their head and it was over from the jump.”

Jordan Cameron had five of his 10 points in the extra session. Johnson had four points and Williamson had three. Johnson also had 10 rebounds in the game, while Williamson had five boards and four assists.

The Falcons had only five days of practice together with many of players just coming out of football season.

“This means a ton because you’re going up there, they’re 3A and that atmosphere was rowdy, loud and all that,” Beavers said. “We fought hard against a tough team on the road in a hostile environment. It shows we can win in a lot of different situations.”
