Cherokee County got big free throws from Audrey Haygood and Raechel Russell in the second overtime and survived a scoreless fourth quarter to take a 42-39 thriller from Southside Monday and reach the finals of the Championship Girls Thanksgiving Classic.

Southside outscored the Lady Warriors 11-0 in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Southside’s Madison Shaw hit a free throw with 34 seconds left to tie the game and Sara Kate Yancey drove around the line and missed with two seconds left sending it into overtime.

Cherokee County missed a corner 3 and a put back in the final three seconds of the first extra period to force a second overtime.

The Lady Warriors will play county rival Spring Garden in Tuesday’s championship game. The Lady Panthers routed Hokes Bluff 61-19. 

Ace Austin led Spring Garden with 22 points, 11 assists, 11 steals and an eye-popping 42 efficiency points. Kayley Kirk shad 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals, and Chloe Rule scored 10 against her former team. Libby Brown had a team-high eight rebounds and four steals. 

In the consolation bracket, Jacksonville gave coach Corey Mize his first career head coaching victory, 50-44 over Ohatchee. The Lady Golden Eagles fell behind 7-0, then switched to a 1-3-1 defense that got them back in the game and they continued changing defenses the rest of the way.

“We just finally played how I knew they could,” said Mize, who took over the girls team when Tres Buzan moved over to take the defending state champion boys team right before school started. “It feels good because it was a county win, but it was more of a stepping stone of what we want to achieve for the year.”

Dee Prothro led the Lady Golden Eagles with 16 points, 14 rebounds and drew the defensive assignment on Ohatchee star Jorda Crook. Priothro didn’t do anything different in this game than she had the previous three, Mize said, it’s just her layups started falling.

Ashley Grant was Jacksonville’s leading scorer with 18 points and Halaina Lozano had nine points on three 3-pointers. Crook was her typical dominant self with 26 points and 23 rebounds.

“We had a discussion today about new roles this year, how I feel like they were in the same roles they were last year with a different team,” Mize said. “We lost a player last year and had some shoes to fill, they realized that and stepped into those shoes to help us get a win together.

“Everybody stepped up to fill a different role. We just played better as a team tonight.”

Alexandria beat Ranburne 60-36 in the other consolation bracket game. Jordyn Walker led the Lady Cubs with 23 points Ranburne’s Briley Merrill led all scorers with 25 points.

Thomas Curlee led the way with 32 points and 18 rebounds. Conner Richerzhagen added 10 points and Yoshi Arevalo, who regularly gives the Lions a double-figure game, had eight points and 11 boards.

“That monster might have four heads if Eli continues to put it in the hoop,” Faith coach Cory Hughes said.
