HEFLIN – It took a day, but Faith Christian found some scoring without its leading scorer and another weapon in a 62-45 bounce back victory over Ranburne in the consolation bracket of the Heflin Holiday Hoops Classic.

Junior Carson Harris, a transfer from Oxford playing in only his fourth varsity game since regaining his eligibility, broke out with a team-high 18 points. He was 8-of-16 from the field, grabbed eight rebounds, had three steals and three assists.

He made his varsity debut against Wadley the week leading into Christmas and had scored only four points in his previous three games. He got his first start Tuesday against Clay Central.

“I don’t really want to take any of the credit for it,” Harris said. “I wouldn’t have done it without any of my teammates.

“Coach Cory (Hughes), he believed in me from Wadley having zero, White Plains turning the ball over and yesterday having four points. He just kept believing in me and believing in me; without that, I don’t believe in myself. I was to give credit to him, my teammates and my friends on and off the court because without them encouraging me I wouldn’t have had the confidence to even touch the ball.”

Harris came to Faith when his mother was installed as a full-time teacher at the school, but he had to wait until first semester grades were posted to regain his eligibility. He was a junior varsity player at talent-rich Oxford and bided his time this season on the Faith JV.

He tried not to get too anxious as the days wound down, instead treating his JV games with the same regard as the one Wednesday. And today didn’t feel any different, even though the stakes were higher and the results more prolific.

“It just felt like I was playing basketball,” he said. “I wasn’t worried about turning the ball over or messing up, I was just playing. The past games I’ve been so worried about messing up or turning the ball over, but coach Cory and my teammates got that out of me. Today I was just playing basketball.”

That was Hughes’ message to him. He had all the confidence in the newcomer, just play.

“I told him just play, just have fun, be loose, relax, play,” Hughes said. “Today, he finally found himself and started playing like a dawg, playing a little bit like Eli (Robinson). Having him really be confident coming off the bench is going to help us tremendously.”

Harris was a much-welcomed addition with senior Thomas Curlee, the county’s leading scorer, still out sick.

Conner Richerzhagen (13), Yoshua Arevalo (12) and Robinson (11) also scored in double figures for the Lions. They pulled away with a 24-point fourth quarter that included four 3-pointers.

“We found some points,” said Hughes, whose team had only 35 in its opening-round loss to Clay Central. “It took three whole quarters to find them, but we finally kicked it into gear and figured out how to play without Thomas.”

It is the Lions’ hope Curlee can return for Thursday’s fifth-place game against Weaver in a game that carries county tournament seeding implications.

WEAVER 48, WOODLAND 28: Zack Garner and Keshawn Allen enjoyed breakout games of eight and 14 points, respectively, and the Bearcats came to life in the second half to run past Woodland.

Garner had been averaging two points a game this season, but scored all eight of his points Wednesday in the second half. Allen, one of four B-team call-ups for the tournament, had scored only 13 points in his previous four varsity games.

“We’ve been waiting on him at least a year and a half to do that,” Weaver coach Beau Winn said of Garner. “He gets really hyped and I think he finally calmed down. Tonight, he played basketball instead of worrying about making mistakes. He just played, especially in the third quarter.

“And Keshawn, he played great, too. With that 7-footer (Woodland’s Christian Beam), we put him on the block, he shot faked, got him up in the air and got to the free throw line four or six times.”

The Bearcats started slow once again, scoring only six points in the first quarter, but Winn challenged them to pick up the pace. They scored nine in the second to take the lead and virtually exploded in the second half.

“I know we’re coming out flat,” Winn said. “In the third I asked them if they could double up because six in a quarter is just preposterous; nine is a little better. We fixed it in the second half.”

Huntsville City Classic

HUNTSVILLE – Behind John Broom’s 25 points and Cam Johnson’s 24, Jacksonville bounced back from its double-overtime disappointment in the opening round and beat Madison Academy 73-58 Wednesday morning in the Huntsville City Classic.

A few hours later, the Golden Eagles picked up their second win of the day, beating Mae Jemison, 48-41.

Broom went 9-for-14 from the floor with four 3-pointers and nine rebounds. Johnson was 10-for-14 and grabbed six rebounds.

Caden Johnson and Devin Barksdale also scored in double figures with 10 points apiece. Barksdale had six assists.

Broom was big in the second game as well. He led three Jacksonville scorers in double figures with 12 points. Cam and Caden Johnson had 11 and 10, respectively.

BOB JONES 42, OXFORD 24: The Yellow Jackets couldn’t score against the Patriots and dropped out of the winner’s bracket.

The basket was simply closed to them. They were only 9-of-44 from the floor, 4-of-26 from 3-point range, and had only three field goals in the second half. They were just 2-of-9 from the free throw line.

“It wasn’t necessarily their D and not necessarily bad shots,” Oxford coach Joel VanMeter said. “There were open 3s that we missed and open drives to the basket where they’re a little physical and we couldn’t finish one. If you’re Duke, if you’re Kentucky, if you’re North Carolina, if you go 9-for-44 you’re not winning the game.”

But the Patriots weren’t turning over the scoreboard either. In the second half they were only 5-of-16 from the field with one 3-pointer.

“Our effort was there,” VanMeter said. “Up until the last three minutes of the game we were right there if we make one or two plays in the game. We just couldn’t make one. We’re still trying to figure out what it takes competitive-wise every play to win a game.”

T.J. Allen was Oxford’s leading scorer with nine points. Jayden Lewis had a game-high 11 rebounds.

WHITEWATER (GA) 51, WHITE PLAINS 49: The Wildcats rallied from a 27-5 deficit early in the second quarter to take a lead on Luke Bussey’s bucket with 34 seconds to play, but a late block/charge call that didn’t go their way and two Barron Ofosu free throws with four seconds left turned them away.

It was the second day in a row here they climbed back into the game after falling behind by double digits in the first half. Bussey led the Wildcats with 11 points.

Supreme Courts

PIEDMONT 77, PRATTVILLE CHRISTIAN 51: Ish Bethel missed the mark with his first two shots, but he didn’t let it deter him. He shot his way to a career-high 27 points, leading the Bulldogs to their best offensive production of the season.

Bethel had 16 points in the first half as the Bulldogs (9-2) opened a 39-28 lead. Alex Odam had 12 of his 14 in the half. Cole Wilson hit three 3-pointers in the game and added 11 points.

The night didn’t start off well for Bethel. He airballed his first two shots, but he didn’t let it get him down. He got a steal and a dunk on the next possession to get on track and then buried his next two 3s.

“He played really well on both ends of the floor,” Bulldogs coach JoJo Odam said. “He let his defense get him going on the offensive end.”

The Bulldogs’ previous single-game high this season was 75, the night before against Etowah. They have scored 70 or more three times in their current five-game winning streak.

SKYLINE 76, ALEXANDRIA 67: Bryant Kennamer hit his first four shots of the game – all 3-pointers – and missed only three all night on the way to a 29-point effort for Skyline.

The Vikings hit eight of their 10 3-pointers in the game in the first quarter on the way to a 29-21 lead. Chase Bickers hit a pair of 3s in the first quarter and went on to score 18 points.

Drake Davis and Kory Cargal led Alexandria with 14 points apiece. Cleat forrest had 12 and Antonio Ross had 10 behind 5-of-6 shooting from the field.

Lady Cubs playing for crown

HEFLIN – If there’s a tournament to play in, Alexandria wants to play for the championship.

The Lady Cubs will get the chance to fulfil that desire after beating host Cleburne County 68-32 Wednesday night in the girls semifinals of the Heflin Holiday Hoops Classic.

The Lady Cubs (7-7) will play Hiram (Ga.) for the title Thursday at 6 p.m. Hiram beat Ohatchee 63-45 in the other winner’s bracket semifinal.

“That’s kind of our theme,” Alexandria coach Craig Kiker said. “We want to be in the area championship with a chance to win it. We want to be in this game, so we might as well get prepared in things like this.

“I hate a round-robin tournament where you just play games. I want to play for something. It doesn’t always work out where you get to the championship game, but I like to be able to play for something. That’s what we’re going to do at the end of the year, so I think (Thursday’s game) is the best way to practice that.”

The Lady Cubs were in the Champions Thanksgiving Classic earlier this year and finished fifth. They lost their first game, then won their last two.

They beat the Lady Tigers with a balanced attack from both inside and outside. Jordyn Walker gave them a good in-and-out game and finished with 18 points. Jill Cockrell hit three 3s and had 12. Charlee Parris added nine.

“We shot the ball pretty well from the outside and that made it easier to score inside,” Kiker said. “And we took the ball to the rim and got fouled.”

They also played some stout defense. They held Lady Tigers’ leading scorer Faith Brown to six points in the second half and none in the fourth quarter.

“We’re still learning,” Kiker said. “I’ve told people who ask you’ve got to give us some time, we’re learning. I still think we’ll be OK by the end of the year, better than we are now, so I think it’s awesome we have a chance to play for something here halfway through the season.”

HIRAM (GA.) 63, OHATCHEE 44: Bryant Ginn knew the quality of team his Lady Indians would be facing in the semifinals and reality matched the expectation. The Lady Hornets jumped out to a 25-11 lead in the first quarter and basically kept everyone but Jorda Crook off the scoreboard the rest of the way. Crook led all scorers with 33 points, but the rest of her teammates managed just 12 points. The Lady Indians will play host Cleburne County in the girls consolation game.
