Mindi Amberson had been waiting all season to see what her Wellborn girls basketball team gave her Wednesday night.

The Lady Panthers played more together as a team against Munford than they had all season, especially in the fourth quarter, and rallied for their first victory of the season, 38-30.

Wellborn trailed for three quarters and 25-22 going into the fourth quarter. But the Lady Panthers (1-9) outscored their Talladega County visitors 16-5 in the fourth quarter and hit six free throws in the final 1:30.

“For the first time they actually showed y’all what we see in practice,” Amberson said. “Playing as a team. Brook (Singleton), one of my seniors, stepped it up. Anna (Odom), right there behind her. These are phenomenal leaders on our team, again, we see at practice. We’ve just been waiting on them to show up on the court.”

Singleton gave the Lady Panthers the lead 26-25 with 5:18 to play. Munford tied it at 28, then Odom started the run of free throws that put the Lady Panthers ahead.

The key stretch came with less than a minute left. Wellborn already was leading three, when Odom was fouled and the Lady Lions were hit with a technical for a post-play push. The Lady Panthers hit three free throws in the entire exchange to increase their lead without the clock moving. Odom sealed it with two free throws with 18.2 seconds left.

“The girls on the bench stood up as a team and they’re really what pushed them over,” Amberson said. “Even the players on the court that were in the locker room, that’s what they said, thank you to our bench. To me that says so much about we’re playing as a team now.”

Odom led all scorers with 15 points. She also had six rebounds and six steals. Singleton had 10 points. They both scored nine points in the second half, five in the fourth quarter.

“I’m very happy,” Odom said. “It’s our first win of the season and it’s very exciting.”
