JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville was giving one of the best teams in the state all it could handle in the first quarter. It looked like the Golden Eagles were going to keep Plainview off the scoreboard for most of the quarter and get out of it with a minor victory.

Then Plainview’s Lauren Jimmerson beat the buzzer with a 3 from the ‘s’ in Golden Eagles on the far side of the floor and just that quickly, Jacksonville coach Corey Mize observed, “they went Plainview.”

With Jimmerson’s 3-ball the jumping off point, the No. 3 3A Lady Bears erupted for 28 points in the second quarter and hit 13 more 3s in the game to pull for a 68-24 victory.

“This is a good ball team that we have,” Mize said. “We’ve got a lot of girls who can play the game, they just need confidence instilled in them. And that’s all I’ve been trying to do with them all weekend leading up to this game. I was like ‘y’all can play with any team when you play your best.’

“They came out with confidence and played their game. We didn’t do anything extra. They were intense on defense and we pushed the ball on offense, which kept the pace up, and we play best when the pace is up.”

Both teams struggled to score early, but the Golden Eagles went up 5-4 and it looked like it would stay that way until Jimmerson’s hit her 3. And then everyone hit a 3. The Lady Bears hit 15 3s in the game, 13 in the final three quarters, with Jimmerson hitting four for all 12 of her points and Sawyer Kate Hulgan hitting three.

“It was like a short dagger,” Mize said. “We know they’re a good shooting team. We played this great quarter and then they hit that 3 to take the lead for the quarter. We wanted to set small goals of winning each quarter and that was the dagger to lose the quarter like that.”

The Golden Eagles’ offense is still feeling the effects of Ashley Grant’s absence. Mize is hopeful his leading scorer will return in time for the area tournament.
