Munford gets no-hitter from Brown, beats Sylacauga to win Talladega County baseball tournament for the second year in a row
By East Alabama Sports Today
MUNFORD — Riley Brown pitched a no-hitter, and host Munford beat Sylacauga 3-0 on Saturday to win the Talladega County baseball tournament for the second year in a row.
Brown struck out eight batters. He also had two hits.
“He is a three-year starting pitcher for us,” Munford coach Derek Stephens said. “No stage is too big for him. He has thrown in county championships, area championships, playoff games. The bigger the stage, the better he pitches.
“We are very proud of his accomplishments, but as far as the no-hitter goes, his teammates made some great plays in the field. Mason Brewer made a diving play in center, and Brody Stephens made a leaping catch at first to help aid the no-hitter. It really was a team effort.”
Jonathan Ponder went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Brody Stephens was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Cameron Strickland and Connor Fisher each hit a double.
Munford and Sylacauga won semifinals earlier Saturday. Munford beat Childersburg 4-1, and Sylacauga beat Lincoln 4-2.
“We have two goals each year,” Derek Stephens said. “The first one is to win our county tournament. The next is to win our area. We achieved one of those tonight.
“Couldn’t be more proud of our guys. Our kids make it a priority to win the county tournament. They take a lot of pride in it. That all started last year, when we one the first one. That confidence carried over into this year. We had been there before, and it showed with the confidence we played with.”
